Steve Crawford has a postgraduate degree in military history from the University of York. A former employee of the British intelligence services, he has worked on numerous foreign assignments. Now a freelance writer, he has written several books on elite units, such as The SAS at Close Quarters and SAS Gulf Warriors. He continues to research this particular field of military affairs and currently lives in London.

Such a Fun and Fascinating Escape Back in Time

Once again Mr Crawford has brought his almost unequalled music knowledge to the page with a list that is interesting, informative and always entertaining.

I am truly much more a child of the 80s, but most of these were recognizable to me to some extent. You most certainly will find a need to listen to any number of these as you go through, some for the first time, some for the thousandth time and many with new ears after reading Steve's commentary.

The beauty of writing this in retrospect is that time has proven a great number of these artists have had a much more profound effect than anyone would have guessed in 1979. Some have aged like fine wine, others will be more appreciated by more mature ears. The prologue alone will make you give more thought to just how expansive the 70s music range was, and how unique this is in the history of popular music.

Highly recommended!

Even if you lived through the 70s, it's easy to forget how many great songs (and genres!) came out of that time. This book covers the ones that matter, and then some (including many great songs that are not repeated over and over on classic rock radio). I'll probably buy a couple of copies to give to my nieces and nephews for Christmas. They grew up listening to this music, and love it, but don't know as much about it as I'm sure they would like. Every song listed is accompanied by interesting facts about the song and the artist, some that will even add to the knowledge base of rock know-it-alls, like yours truly. Highly recommended!

Bedbury, who headed advertising and marketing divisions for Nike and Starbucks during their phenomenal growth, coaches on establishing a memorable brand in this appealing, well-organized guide. BRANDING, FOR EXECUTIVES. READ IT FOR THE CASE STUDIES.

It is difficult to review a book that one has enjoyed reading and then say that it was not up to the mark (in terms, of course, of only my expectations.)
No doubt that Scott Bedbury's work is a fast paced read, his writing is lucid and quite frequently quotably light-hearted. There is a lot of material here for people in larger corporations or even general marketing folks. And where Bedbury truly shines is in the case studies he presents in the 8 chapters.
But if, like me, you set off on this book looking for some newfangled insights into the world of branding, then this is not the book for you. The title claims to proffer "8 principles". Let's face it, at the end of the day, principles are not that hard to create and this becomes quite painfully clear when you reach the end of this book and wonder if you have learnt anything new.
But I am being unfairly critical. From his style, it seems an approachable business book was precisely what Bedbury's intended?
As a comprehensive introduction to the field of branding, I'd still recommend "Strategic Brand Asset Management" by Keller. For a discussion of some innovative yet reasonable forms of brand creation, especially on a shoestring, I'd usually point to a PR related book, or perhaps the rapier wit "60-minutes Brand Strategist."
But as a gentle introduction for executives in to the nebulous world of branding, or as a non-technical business book for business folk in general who place less emphasis on a structured analytical framework and are more interested in a soft springboard into the field, then "Emotional Branding" and this book from Bedbury are pretty near the top of my list of recommendations.
Very accessible and insightful stuff, if you aren't expecting a summary of last decade's JCR.

Excellent!

I was fortunate enough to work briefly with Scott Bedbury during an internship at Silicon Valley startup Tellme Networks in summer of 2000. So I can vouch for the fact that not only is he a visionary business thinker, but he is also one of the most genuinely likable people I have ever met. So it was with some excitement that I picked up his book ...
As the wizard behind the brands of Nike and Starbucks, Scott probably has on of the best resumes on the planet for writing a book on developing a strong brand. The book is an excellent introduction for those who are unfamiliar with the concept of "brand", as well as a terrific resource for those engaged in the daily struggle of trying to build a powerful one.
The book covers how to discover your brand, how to manage the growth of your brand, how to champion the brand within a large company where everybody might not "get it", and how to build a strong brand by helping communities.
Real-life examples abound, highlighting the benefits that can accrue to a company with a strong brand and the disastrous consequences of ignoring issues of brand. Throughout the book we learn of brands that "get it" (Nike, Harley Davidson), brands that fell from glory (Marlboro, Levi's), brands that were revived (IBM, Apple), and brands that have never got it (Exxon, Microsoft).
What makes the book stand out in particular is Scott's wealth of personal experiences that he peppers throughout the pages. Some great examples include:
- Scott's early efforts to widen Nike's brand focus from hardcore "sports" to the more inclusive "fitness".
- Scott's decision at Nike to avoid traditional outsourced market research in favor of internal Brand Strength Monitor (BSM) focus groups. (Interestingly, Scott blames Nike's abandoning of BSM for its inability to properly anticipate or respond to its labor controversy)
- Scott's involvement in the difficult decision to allow Starbucks coffee to be served on United Airlines, highlighting the difficult decision Growth versus Brand Dilution. (how do you recreate the "coffee house" atmosphere and serve a perfect cup at 30,000 feet?)
- Scott's hot tub encounter with Microsoft's Steve Ballmer (you'll have to read it to find out)
Overall, Scott has done an excellent job of effectively communicating his experiences. A New Brand World is an excellent read for anyone interested in learning about or mastering the concept of branding.

Pretty much everything you need to know about branding

This is an intelligent, well-written book from a guy who has obviously had a great deal of experience marketing high-profile companies (Nike, Starbucks).

Bedbury lays out pretty much everything you need to know about branding in 190 pages. It's obvious he's a good writer and he's got great examples to back up his assertions in the book.

He is hard on Microsoft but, in my opinion, not hard enough. The reviewer who panned this book based on his treatment of Microsoft is short-sighted. This book is about much more than that. Microsoft is a very small part of the book and they are used appropriately as an example of what NOT to do in marketing.

My biggest problem with the book is Bedbury's assertion that companies are becoming more vertical. It simply isn't true. Companies are not vertically-integrating; they're outsourcing many of the tasks associated with building their products. Witness the Apple iPod. No Apple employee has ever assembled an iPod or built the circuit board. It's simply too expensive. If Apple was vertically-integrated and built the iPod, they would probably cost around $5,000.

My second biggest problem with the book is the final chapter "Brand Future." Bedbury comes out of "left" field and uses almost the entire final chapter as a kind of platform for some liberal agenda. I won't spoil it for those of you who subscribe to those ideals (I'm an independent); but, suffice it to say, the chapter felt out of place. Bedbury talks intelligently about branding for 190 pages, and then the book turns into a political white paper for the final 20 pages.

Don't let that distract you from buying the book, however. This is what business books are supposed to be: erudite, thought-provoking and entertaining. Having read hundreds of business books (I teach Business and Marketing), I can tell you that those three traits are in short supply.

This outstanding reference work is the updated and enlarged edition of the acclaimed Encyclopedia of Archaeological Excavations in the Holy Land (Prentice-Hall, c.1976-1978, ed. Michael Avi-Yonah). In this new edition, which keeps to the alphabetical arrangement of the earlier work, some 420 sites are included, many of them newly excavated, with coverage extended to work done through 1991. Over 200 archaeologists contributed articles to this edition. Whenever possible, the latest archaeologist to have excavated a site has been asked to write the entry. Material written by deceased major excavators, including Albright, Kenyon, and Yadin, have been retained except where information was out of date. As in the earlier edition, there are also subject entries (i.e., "churches" and "synagogues") and geographical regions (i.e., "Negev" and "Sinai"). In the writing included from the earlier edition, language has frequently been made more specific, if somewhat less lyrical; yet the larger type of the earlier edition, along with more spacious layouts, made reading more comfortable. These are minor considerations, however, compared with what this work achieves. Sir Flinders Petrie, who carried out the first scientifically excavated dig in Palestine at Tel el-Hesi in 1890, would no doubt be amazed and gratified with the superbly meticulous work done here in gathering and organ izing the findings of the following 100 years of archaeological work in the area. Scholars and researchers will find this reference set indis pensable.

The first archaeological excavations in the Holy Land were conducted by private individuals seeking religious relics and works of art. It was not until the late nineteenth century that systematic excavations began. Organized archaeological expeditions were conducted by European archaeological societies mainly in search of biblical history. Now prehistoric archaeology and research in the social sciences have become motivating forces.

This encyclopedia is a handsome compendium of 365 articles by 205 archaeologists on these excavations and explorations. Site dates range from prehistoric digs to Persian, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Umayyad, and Ottoman periods. The geographic scope of the work includes "both sides of the Jordan River from Sinai and Elath in the south to the sources of the Jordan in the north." Some of the sites are well known to laypeople (Masada, Petra), but many will be familiar only to specialists.

The original two-volume edition of this work was published in Hebrew in 1970. An expanded English version, published between 1975 and 1978, was edited by Michael Avi-Yonah of Hebrew University. Ephraim Stern of Hebrew University, who completed the first English edition after Avi-Yonah's death, is editor of the current set. Authors of the entries are scholars from France, Italy, Great Britain, Israel, the U.S., and the Netherlands. The last archaeologist to conduct a dig at a site authored the new entries, when possible. Many excavations are reported here for the first time (Abila, Ain Ghazal, Appolonia). A list of these would have been helpful to scholars who are familiar with the old edition.

The alphabetically arranged entries vary in length from more than 100 pages (Jerusalem, extensively revised since the 1978 edition) to a brief page ("Bull" Site in Northern Samaria). Underwater exploration is included (Acco). Each entry includes a description accompanied by background material, such as accounts by ancient historians and biblical references. The detailed description often includes periods of occupation, techniques used, structures, pottery finds, and burial sites. Some authors carefully identify each stratum and note changes over periods of time. Most essays contain a bibliography.

The text is liberally illustrated with black-and-white photographs, stratigraphies, floor plans, and contour maps. Thirty-two colorplates depict overviews of excavations, structures such as temples, mosaics, pottery, jewelry, and much more. Entries cite latitude and longitude coordinates keyed to endpaper maps in each volume.

In addition to entries on individual sites, there are composite articles on subjects related to many excavations: Churches, Synagogues, Marine Archaeology, Judean Desert Caves. Biblical names conform to the Revised Standard Version of the Bible; Greco-Roman names are given in Latin form. Hebrew words are transliterated with alternative spellings in parentheses.

Many articles contain theories about community life and conclusions about trade, economy, and relations with other political entities. Caesarea notes, for example, that "in the Herodian state, this city was a pagan and Greek counterweight to Jewish Jerusalem." Various expeditions from the nineteenth century through 1990 are described in this entry, each authored by a different expert. They feature maritime explorations, aqueducts, and theaters and bring into focus the relationship of the site to a contemporary kibbutz. In Qumran, Khirbet and 'Ein Feshkha, the area where the Dead Scrolls were first discovered, the importance of coins and pottery in dating various occupations and periods is emphasized.

As in the 1975-78 edition, this new edition has a name index, a place-name index, and chronological tables. A useful addition is the "Index to Biblical References." Under each place-name or site appears a list of references to the Bible. The excellent user's guide explains symbols, map reference numbers, carbon-14 testing, and where to locate the indexes, bibliographies, and glossary. The latter is especially useful, providing not only the definition of a word but also reference to the concept in another language, for example, "horvah, horvat (Heb.) see khirbeh, khirbet (Arab.) `ruin.'" The new edition also contains a list of authors and their entries.

This scholarly encyclopedia is for anyone seriously interested in the historical archaeology of this region. It will appeal to travelers and to those attempting to understand the current complexities of this region: the Jordan Valley, Golan, Sinai. Collectors and art historians will treasure the photographs. Church and synagogue libraries, large public libraries, and academic libraries that serve archaeology, history, anthropology, classics, or religion departments will find this an invaluable reference work.

Extraordinary Folio!

I borrowed a copy of this gorgeous and generous folio from a local university library over a year ago. I've been wanting to own a copy of it since then. I can honestly say that, if I had to, I would be willing to pay the full retail price for it ($150). It is worth more than that based upon the quality of book construction and image reproduction alone. The content itself is invaluable.

Martin Lings did a great service in collecting these manuscript samples from among the greatest works of calligraphy and illumination known to the world. Here one can see the testimony that "God is Beautiful, and God loves Beauty!" represented in the most delicate devotional art.

Lings opens the collection with an excellent introduction, which provides much insight about the development, structure and intentions of the art; also serving as a key for contemplation of the works. Here is an excerpt:

"[The chapter heading] is usually set in a wide rectangular panel, often richly framed with gold and other colors, and with an arabesque as background to the letters. This heading is prolonged into the outer margin by means of a palmette, a 'little tree', which points horizontally towards the paper's edge and which achieves for the eye the effect of a liberation of incalculable scope.

The palmette in the margin... is a reminder that the reading or chanting of the Qur'an is the virtual starting point of a limitless vibration, a wave that ultimately breaks on the shore of Eternity; and it is above all that shore that is signified by the margin, towards which all the movement of the painting, in palmette, finial, crenellation and flow of arabesque is directed."

After I returned this volume to the library, I found that a local art museum had two or three illuminated Qur'an pages on continuous display. The beauty radiating from original works of this kind, some 800+ years old, effected a stirring in my heart and made my hair stand on end. And this volume contributed very well in preparing the whole of my being to open to that state of appreciation.

This book provides you with the constitution, its background and history, important cases, and how they were decided. It also provides an explanation of articles, clauses and sections.

During the recent supreme court nominations there were a number of pundits providing mis- and disinformation regarding the constitution. This book certainly helped clarify what the constitution really meant.
