take it for what it is

I am in my fourth term of learning C++, and this book was theone required for my first two terms. I came into the program at myUniversity with no programming experience at all, and I was able to quickly understand basic concepts by having a great instructor and reading (and re-reading) this book. While not a great reference, I still consult it for basic concepts I might forget after a long break. If you view it for what it is -- an introductory book -- then I highly recommend it. I found the sections on looping and other conditionals very helpful that first term; functions were handled well, too. This is a book to read and re-read. If the class construct freaks you out, then read that chapter two or three times and you will get the basic idea. A lot of my classmates hated this book -- I never really got a good reason why. Unfortunately, the section on pointers is a little weird, although the info is accurate. I never liked the programming case studies at the end of the chapters either -- they didn't seem to flow well from the chapter material presented. Looking back at the book, especially as an intro book, I can't say enough how well the sections on classes were presented. For some reason, the writing style clicked with me, and the info provided a strong enough basis to further dive into the class construct -- which is an important topic and is the backbone of Abstract Data Types and Object Oriented Programming. Get another book, or a good instructor, for basic pointer concepts. Decent for linked lists. Minimal recursion. From what I've heard, C++ Primer Plus by Prata is a better book in some ways. That's next for me to get.

The best textbook on ANYTHING that I have ever used!

This textbook is the best I have ever used in any course, and I have a Ph.D. in psychology so I have had a LOT of courses. As a beginning programming student, I found this book to be clear, concise, entertaining, and very helpful. When you get tired of all of the new terms, the author "takes a break" and either introduces you to a famous figure in the history of computer science, or does a little "chatting" about tips -- stuff that it would be helpful for you to remember, but not stuff you'll be tested on. I have been in the beginner's course for 2 months now, taking a web-based course, and have learned an AWFUL LOT just from this book. You WILL LEARN introductory C++ from this book.

Lots of new ideas

This book has hundreds of new ideas with regards to the causes of asthma, and the writer assumes that if you try three of them your chances of healing are pretty high! The text is also highly referenced, which adds a lot of credibility. But because of this completeness of the topic, it's is not an easy read, I have spent several weeks reading and I'm still not quite finished with the book.

I loved this book. I am having a moderately chronic asthma problem right now. I read this book in its entirety. I am a lay person, but I am also smart. I was motivated to read and understand this book. As I write I have my nebulizer going and the mouthpiece in my mouth. This book is wonderful. Yes, there is a lot of medical stuff. However, I have found that you can read through things you don't understand completely to get at what you can understand. I have book marked the beedoodis out of Dr. Adams' wonderful, helpful, understandable book. I really need this. Thank you so much Dr. Adams. Maybe someday I won't have to medicate while I type.

I enjoyed taking this test exam as it really helped me to identify my weak areas so I know what to focus on in the future.

I was very impressed with the level of detail provided in the solutions which really helped to clearly illustrate the finer points in some of the more complex questions.

The only downside was that I simply could not figure out how to print this from either the Kindle software itself or my iPad. Otherwise, I highly recommend this!

A Terrible Disappointment

As a 4th year undergraduate physics student, I used Williams' book in my introductory nuclear physics course. I found the style and layout of the book to be extremely difficult to follow. Though I am very interested in the subject matter, I was very hard-pressed to make reasonable progress while reading Williams. Too often, information is placed in awkward "boxes", or is inadequately introduced. To make things worse, the book is rife with errors in grammar and spelling, not to mention awkward phrasing. In section 8.10, Willams chooses a script J to represent a moment of inertia and an I for angular momentum--contrary to convention--seemingly, in an attempt to confuse the student!

Best of a bad lot

Not happy with this book. The man knows his physics, but his use of the English language needs a good make-over. Sentences too long, very few commas, and muddled grammar. Many proof-reading errors. Problems are too hard for beginners, being excerpts from Honours exams - which students are tested on at the END of the course, not while they are still learning. No examples, no solutions and no colour. Other books are worse, though. The definitive Nuclear Physics textbook is yet to be written. Surely there must be a professor somewhere who knows his stuff, is a half-decent writer and has some idea of style and composition.

Not one of the better physics texts

The main problem with this book is that it gives no worked examples. It also gives problems that require a knowledge of material only covered in later chapters of the book. All in all there are probably better books available from the students perspective.

Good for Basic Concepts

This text is a really good resource for basic concepts of palliative care/end of life. The chapters are SUPER short (sometimes only one page!) It has some really good Evidenced-based practice recommendations (hence the title). I do recommend this text for those who are entering the palliative care field or who are in school learning about this topic.

A great, well written, well edited book. The index is solid in it and the information in the book is backed up with easily accessible references. I would recommend this to anyone interested in palliative medicine - it's a great all around reference book for the health care professional.
