The Offbeat Wonders of Maryland! }8#> (Goatman Smile)

This brought back many memories of my childhood when I grew up with some of the many urbans legends looked at in this entertaining volume! Inexplicably enduring figures as the Goat Man, the Bunny Man, and the Snallygaster are shown with such real life characters as Moll Dyer, persecuted as a witch and the notorious crime mistress Patty Cannon. One of the nice touches is the inclusion of current colorful characters in the state, such as horror show host Count Gore Devol and eccentric art entrepreneur Joe of Ocean Gallery in Ocean City. I won't go into any more detail because the sheer volume of surprises is worth many times the price! Initially, I was disappointed that precise locations of many of these wonders were not included but there are understandable reasons given for the omissions, but it can also be said that being easy to find would cheapen them. These wonderful secrets make me appreciate living in the Old Line State even more! There was so much more that could have been added that I could not give it a full five stars...but that is what future editions are for! I can't wait for the next one!

SportsCenter and ESPN Radio mainstay Greenberg wanted to be a journalist, but changed his mind when he was asked, while working at a smalltown newspaper, to interview the mother of a high school valedictorian who had just tragically died. Greenberg moved on to covering sports and never looked back, believing there's nothing better than "investing everything into something that means absolutely nothing." Indeed, his book resembles Seinfeld, with its lightly humorous yet serious renditions of everyday minutiae. Divided into transcripts from some of Greenberg's radio monologues and journal entries about his family life, the book is another entry in the Men Are from Mars... school of sociological observation. Greenberg's viewpoint on the opposite sex essentially involves his subtitle: describing the things he does that make his wife treat him like an idiot. There's plenty of good material in this alone, as well as in some sidesplitting, borscht belt–style material about his gambling-addicted aunt Ada. Unfortunately, the slightly pompous but desperately charming Greenberg also feels the need to fill readers in on such matters as why he doesn't like going to the supermarket and what designer labels he's wearing.

On the air, he is funny, literate, and obviously well read far beyond the narrow borders of sports. Here, examining his public life in the context of his roles as father and husband, he exhibits the same sensibilities that make him an engaging on-air presence. He tackles the inherent absurdity of his job--chatting about sports in a complex, ever-more-troubling world--but also about the perks of his quasi fame and the joy he extracts from his work. It's nice to read about a lucky sports guy who knows he is lucky and unabashedly celebrates it. He also takes many of the things he has observed in a life dominated by sports and explains how he is applying them to the raising of his daughter. What makes the third book valuable

I had my doubts about this third book in the series and expected a lot of rehashing. Plus it comes out 3 months after Blake's death, so.... But, to my pleasant surprise, this is a great book. Number one, Blake writes about his own journey and this stuff is great. The decisions we make that either get us where we want to go or not. What is more important: Doing it your way or succeeding? Secondly, there is a bunch of new stuff, I am especially happy about the five new finale beats. Very useful.

The contributors

David G. De Long, an architect, is Professor of Architecture and former Chair of the Graduate Group in Historic Preservation at the University of Pennsylvania. His books include Frank Lloyd Wright: Designs for an American Landscape, 1922-1932 (1997), Louis I. Kahn: In the Realm of Architecture (1991), and Bruce Goff: Toward Absolute Architecture (1988). He has taught at the University of Sydney, Australia; the Middle East Technical University, Turkey; and Columbia University, New York, from which he received his Ph.D. in architectural history.

Jean-Louis Cohen is Professor at the Institut Fran�ais d'Urbanisme in Paris and at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, New York. His publications include Mies van der Rohe (1996); Scenes of the World to Come: European Architecture and the American Challenge 1893-1960 (1995); Andr� Lur�at (1894-1970); Autocritique d'un moderne (1995); and Le Corbusier and the Mystique of the USSR: Theories and Projects for Moscow, 1928-1936 (1992). He was recently appointed by the French Minister of Culture to create a museum of architecture in Paris.

J. Michael Desmond, and architect, is Associate Professor in the School of Architecture at Louisiana State University, from which he received his Bachelor of Architecture degree. He holds his Master's degree from Harvard University and Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has taught at Harvard and Tulane universities, the Rhode Island School of Design, the University of Massachusetts, and the Boston Architectural Center, and has practiced architecture in Louisiana, Massachusetts, and New York.

David A. Hanks is Director of Exhibitions International, New York City, and Consulting Curator for the Montreal Museum of Decorative Arts. He has held curatorial positions at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and from the Graham Foundation to carry out research for The Decorative Designs of Frank Lloyd Wright, Dutton, 1979.

Richard Joncas teaches and lectures on Frank Lloyd Wright as well as modern American and European architecture. His essay on Wright's Hanna house appeared in the September 1993 issue of the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians. His dissertation for Stanford University, which he is currently preparing for publication, concerned Wright's later work and its non-rectangular geometry.

Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer came to the Taliesin Fellowship as an apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright in 1949. With the exception of a year he spent in Paris studying at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts, he has remained with the Fellowship ever since. He is director of The Frank Lloyd Wright Archives, a member of the board of trustees of The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, and the author of nearly forty books on Wright's life and work, notably Frank Lloyd Wright: The Masterworks (1993). He lives in Taliesin West, Wright's winter home and studio and the international headquarters of the Wright Foundation, with his Doberman, Geronimo.

Jack Quinan is Professor in the School of Architecture at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he has taught since 1975. He also taught at the University of Rhode Island in 1972-75 and holds his Master's and Ph.D. from Brown University. The curator of Frank Lloyd Wright's Darwin D. Martin house, he is currently completing a book on Wright's relationship with Martin, one of his leading clients. He is the author of Frank Lloyd Wright's Larkin Building: Myth and Fact (1987) and numerous articles on the architect.

Jean-Louis Cohen is Professor at the Institut Fran�ais d'Urbanisme in Paris and at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, New York. His publications include Mies van der Rohe (1996); Scenes of the World to Come: European Architecture and the American Challenge 1893-1960 (1995); Andr� Lur�at (1894-1970); Autocritique d'un moderne (1995); and Le Corbusier and the Mystique of the USSR: Theories and Projects for Moscow, 1928-1936 (1992). He was recently appointed by the French Minister of Culture to create a museum of architecture in Paris.

J. Michael Desmond, and architect, is Associate Professor in the School of Architecture at Louisiana State University, from which he received his Bachelor of Architecture degree. He holds his Master's degree from Harvard University and Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has taught at Harvard and Tulane universities, the Rhode Island School of Design, the University of Massachusetts, and the Boston Architectural Center, and has practiced architecture in Louisiana, Massachusetts, and New York.

David A. Hanks is Director of Exhibitions International, New York City, and Consulting Curator for the Montreal Museum of Decorative Arts. He has held curatorial positions at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and from the Graham Foundation to carry out research for The Decorative Designs of Frank Lloyd Wright, Dutton, 1979.

Richard Joncas teaches and lectures on Frank Lloyd Wright as well as modern American and European architecture. His essay on Wright's Hanna house appeared in the September 1993 issue of the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians. His dissertation for Stanford University, which he is currently preparing for publication, concerned Wright's later work and its non-rectangular geometry.

Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer came to the Taliesin Fellowship as an apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright in 1949. With the exception of a year he spent in Paris studying at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts, he has remained with the Fellowship ever since. He is director of The Frank Lloyd Wright Archives, a member of the board of trustees of The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, and the author of nearly forty books on Wright's life and work, notably Frank Lloyd Wright: The Masterworks (1993). He lives in Taliesin West, Wright's winter home and studio and the international headquarters of the Wright Foundation, with his Doberman, Geronimo.

Jack Quinan is Professor in the School of Architecture at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he has taught since 1975. He also taught at the University of Rhode Island in 1972-75 and holds his Master's and Ph.D. from Brown University. The curator of Frank Lloyd Wright's Darwin D. Martin house, he is currently completing a book on Wright's relationship with Martin, one of his leading clients. He is the author of Frank Lloyd Wright's Larkin Building: Myth and Fact (1987) and numerous articles on the architect.

Highly recommend

I recently transitioned out of the military into a corporate job and had no experience with P&L and no financial background but was expected to pick financial terms and concepts up right off the bat. I took an MBA course in finance and accounting to help me out but the information didn't really land as I had no business context with which to understand the information. This book really dumbed down a lot of the information and gave me exactly what I needed to understand the financial statements and budget issues within my company. I highly recommend!!!

This book is very useful and handy to have about, however it is now out of print and there is no substitution for it, according to the McGraw Hill rep that I spoke to today, so if you don't already have this book and want it, grab it quick, once it's gone, it's gone for good :(

I was introduced to the one page business plan through my MBA in Design Strategy program at the California College of the Arts, which is the #2 graduate design program in the world at one of the best art schools in the US (yes! An art school). I've had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Horan when he visited as a guest lecturer. He's extremely passionate and dedicated to his mission of helping businesses succeed and the one page business plan is an effective tool. Pairs perfectly with the Business Model Canvas.

Jim's crisp, down to earth, folksy style are the hooks to learning. You can fashion your plan quickly with the help of his templates, think through your vision,mission,goals and objectives efficiently, create charts and graphs to chart your progress with a click of the return key. You will be able to fashion any of these plans in 90 minutes or less and be proud of it. And, you'll want to refer to the one page articles Jim provides as well.

For a solo business to a Fortune 100, this is all you need. I use it in my business and recommend it highly.
