About the Author

Kim S. Elliott BTech, PhD, CEng, MICE is a self-employed consultant to the precast industry in the UK and Malaysia. He was Senior Lecturer in the School of Civil Engineering at Nottingham University, UK, from 1987 to 2010, and was formerly at Trent Concrete Structures Ltd, one of the UK’s leading precast concrete manufacturers. Since 1987, he has been active in research into the behaviour of precast concrete structures and has published more than 120 papers and 6 text books. He is a member of the FIB UK Group and FIB Commission on Prefabrication.

Colin K. Jolly MSc, PhD, CEng, MICE, FIStructE is a self-employed consultant to Cranfield University and the construction industry. He was Senior Lecturer in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Southampton University, UK, from 1978 to 1999, and in the Engineering Systems Department at the Royal Military College of Science (now the Defence Academy) from 2000-2006, having formerly worked for Consulting Engineers in the UK and Oman. Since 1975, he has been active in research into the behaviour of a wide variety of composite materials in structures, and has published more than 280 papers and industrial reports. He is a member of the UK Expert Group providing recommendations for the evolution of the European loading code EN 1990.

Adult/High School—Cetin recounts the 1915 Armenian genocide, when the Turks sent thousands of Armenian people to their deaths. After they rounded up the men, they slit their throats, and marched the women and children until most of them died. Literally snatched out of her mother's arms, Christian-born Heranus was rescued from death by a Muslim gendarme who brought her up as the Muslim girl Seher. Treated as a servant by his wife, Seher eventually married the son, and unsuccessfully searched for her family. The Turks euphemistically called the Armenians "converts," or those who have impure blood. Those who survived the marches were called "the leftovers of the sword." Cetin was an adult when she learned of these horrors and of her grandmother's original family; and her grandmother implored her to help find them, which Cetin set out to do. It is not always clear who is narrating, and Cetin often tells readers something through one individual and then again through another. In spite of these slight problems, My Grandmother is a fascinating account of a story that needs to be heard by teens. Excellent book

My granparents were survivors of the Armenian genocide; the story told in this book is so similar to what I have heard from both my grandmothers.
After so many decades of denial by the Turkish government that such crimes ever happened, it is really great to see finally people within Turkey that are willing to tell the truth.
I give Fethiye Cetin a lot of credit for her courage.
This is an excellent book, I highly recommend it.

I am a middle school, high school teacher. I have read this book to several classes, and they love it. It is a jumping off point for their own feelings and makes a great writing assignment for them as well.
It's rare when kids ask you to read a book to them over and over.

Funny and so true

I taught fourth grade and the boys in the class read this book non-stop. One or two parents got all offended, came in all mad because they heard about "some book". When they actually read it they calmed down. The girls would read it and say, "yeah". The boys would read it and go, "oh, now I get it".

He then started his career as a surgeon in a busy Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, which functioned in three major hospitals in the private sector in Cochin. Ten years later, at 39, just as he was beginning to realize his passion as a surgeon, he su� ered a massive stroke that paralyzed the left side, wreaking his surgical career in the process. This ‘bolt from the blue’, necessitated change of vocation from that of a surgeon to that of an Intensivist in the Surgical ICU, where he works as Senior Specialist. Having lost the sense of direction in life, at least momentarily, he took to writing. He found a new avenue to express himself, through the unfamiliar world of letters, exchanging his scalpel for the pen, in the process. His new-found passion had him contribute in various sections of the national daily, The New Indian Express.

A wonderful surprise

It must sound depressing to read a book about a handsome young man who, just as his brilliant career as a surgeon is beginning to soar, suffers a massive stroke, ending his life as a surgeon forever. No question Dr. George Jacob did struggle trying to figure out just who he was supposed to be for the rest of his life, but this book will surprise you. It is full of good humor, the fun and games of children, and a delightful glimpse into his upbringing and life in far southwest India, plus the amazing support he has had from his family, friends and professional colleagues. You see him and his siblings singing along with Nashville’s “Gentleman Jim” Reeves on recordings his father brought home to Kerala from the United States. It is also a very honest story of how different the world of medicine can look from his experience climbing out of the hole the stroke put him in.
Dr. Jacob is new to writing, so don’t expect a smooth, poetic read, although I did not find any of his quirks with the English language to be particularly distracting. It is a wonderful story of the ups and downs of true healing, straight from the heart.

The first Sino-U.S. treaty in 1844 authorized the extraterritorial application of American law in a putatively lawless China. A kind of legal imperialism, this practice long predated U.S. territorial colonialism after the Spanish-American War in 1898, and found its fullest expression in an American district court’s jurisdiction over the “District of China.” With urgent contemporary implications, legal Orientalism lives on in the enduring damage wrought on the U.S. Constitution by late nineteenth-century anti-Chinese immigration laws, and in the self-Orientalizing reforms of Chinese law today. In the global politics of trade and human rights, legal Orientalism continues to shape modern subjectivities, institutions, and geopolitics in powerful and unacknowledged ways.
