When Brontorina Apatosaurus appears at the door of Madame Lucille's Dance Academy for Boys and Girls, she faces what could be sure rejection. Young Clara and Jack tug at Madame to accept her, while naysayers jeer at her lack of proper shoes. Finally, Madame admits Brontorina, and humorous scenes show little boys and girls doing arabesques, relevés, and jetés, while enormous Brontorina gracefully crashes into the ceiling. Madame concludes that the new pupil is just too big. Brontorina turns to leave, a dinosaur-size tear falling from her eye. Then the teacher has a realization: The problem is not that you are too big. The problem is that my studio is too small, and the academy gets relocated and renamed. A quiet fusion of pathos, comedy, and passion is echoed in the painterly, softly textured, muted oil illustrations. When Brontorina's size limits her horizons, Madame Lucille changes her own assumptions (as well as her studio). Her broad-minded approach opens up a range of new possibilities. Text and illustrations work beautifully together in this witty fantasy. Though in lesser hands the plot might have seemed tired, here speech balloons alternate with narration to tell the story in a fresh, droll manner. In Cecil's arresting oil paintings, the tawny orange dinosaur stands out boldly against slate blue or white backgrounds, and the unusual texture of the paint creates a distinctive effect. Brontorina makes a hugely sympathetic heroine as pictured here, and the stylized figures of her teacher and classmates are no less appealing. Brontorina covers acceptance, rejection, being yourself, differences, and following your dreams quite beautifully. When Brontorina enters Madame Lucille's Dance Academy she is met with warmth and curiosity. But she's also met with a little bit of an attitude by two girls who just can't seem to find anything nice to say. It's like they want her to fail. They have a very minor role but I pointed out their put-downs. A kiddo said, "They are trying to stand in front of her dream!" Luckily, there are two other dancers, Clara and Jack, who want nothing more then to help her succeed. We need to lift each other up - not cut each other down. This was a well received message thanks to Brontorina. Major kudos to the author for picking a dinosaur to be a ballerina. This kept both boys and girls engaged. The last illustration got a heartwarming "AHHHHHH" from all the students. Oh, and from me too! As an elementary school counselor, it's refreshing to find books like Brontorina.

Fun story with a great lesson

I loved this story! Brontorina Apatosaurus is a dinosaur who just has to dance. After all,she has the name of a ballerina doesn't she? I loved Madame Lucille's attitude of acceptance and Brontorina's steadfast refusal to give up on her dream. I even liked the snarky girls on the sidelines that kept commenting on how she didn't have the right shoes. The illustrations are simple and adorable, giving Brontorina just the perfect amount of innocence and charm that will have every reader rooting for her. The ending, which shows just how far Madame Lucille was willing to go to make sure that Brontorina could dance, is a testament to inclusiveness. In the end, she even gets the right shoes. This is a perfect choice for preschool and kindergarten groups as a read aloud, and can be used effectively to promote discussions about acceptance. Recommended

This one will be a classic!

I came across this book while looking for other books Randy Cecil has illustrated (we loved his 'We've all got belly buttons'). This is my 21 month old's favorite book. Granted, this is for older children but my daughter enjoys being read to and loves the emotion in this book. As a parent reading the book to her (many times a day) I'm nowhere near being sick of the book; Randy Cecil's illustrations are beautiful and James Howe's text is just enough, so we hover on each page talking about what else is going on.
I hope this book will teach my daughter acceptance of people no matter their differences and the determination to hold on to her dreams. Can't recommend this book enough!

This is a new edition of Colman's classic work. It is thorough, well-documented, well-organized, and surprisingly readable. I have owned sequential editions for that reason. I find the text much more helpful that internet for these kinds of patients.

Summary. Chinese Foreign Minister Qian's son, Qian Ning, has written a best-selling book about his impressions of life as a student in the United States. Qian wrote his book upon his
return to China after studying journalism and Chinese literature for five years at the University of Michigan. Studying in America, now a runaway best-seller in both legal and pirated editions, reflects the Qian Ning's very deep and fair-minded assessment of China, America and their relations. Far deeper and much more sophisticated than the recent wave
of shallow, America bashing best-sellers, Qian's book is imbued with Chinese patriotism with a clear-eyed and fair-minded view of the good and the bad of Chinese and American society and traditions. Although only a small percentage of the Chinese students who went to the United States over the last fifteen years have returned to China, more and more are choosing to come back as economic conditions improve and political controls loosen.

Chinese Students Encounter America is really a treasure. The anecdotes of foreign students as they experience, confront, and cope with education and life in America are priceless. The translation is very well-done. For those who are interested in Chinese-American relations, modern Chinese history, or the foreign student experience in America, this is a very interesting and unique vantage point.

About the Author

Gary Lister, MBA, MSQA serves as Adjunct Professor, School of Business, Middle Georgia State College. In addition to his long career as a government executive, he has served in the roles of consultant, corporate trainer, instructor, mentor, coach, and advisor for many years.

Mr. Lister is currently Deputy Director of the Fighter Avionics Squadron at the Warner Robins Air Logistic Complex. He manages the repair of F-15, F-16, F-22, and F-35 avionic systems, electronic warfare systems, and countermeasures. His repair portfolio includes navigational controls and indicators, electronic jammers, flare/flack dispensers, computers, displays, processors, controllers, radar, and radar warning components.

Mr. Lister earned a Master of Business Administration degree with an Accounting concentration and a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with an Accounting concentration from Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Georgia, and a Master of Science in Quality Assurance degree from Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta.

A Great Single Source Project Management Resource from PMBOK to AIRMIS!

Mr. Lister’s book is a “masterpiece” that outlines models for project management. In his treatise, he takes us on a journey from the roots of project management to the more sophisticated techniques of project management being used today. This book is a single source reference and guide to aid any organizations and/or businesses in project management. He has captured the essence of the Guide to Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide) and his book can be used to support CAPM and PMP certification. He has explored the PMBOK 10 knowledge areas of project integration, scope, time, cost, quality, human resources, communications, risk, procurement, and stakeholders’ management. He has dealt meticulously with the topics of Operations Management, Project Management, Organizational Management, Program Management, and Portfolio Management. His work with the Aircraft Repair Management Information System (ARMIS) formed the foundation for current aircraft project planning and scheduling systems used in depot aircraft maintenance repair. This volume is a much needed addition to any project manager’s library. I highly recommend it as comprehensive one volume resource tool for project management!
