My favorite Zane Grey
By Coffee Geek
I've been reading Zane Grey novels since I was very young, and this is by far my favorite. I have read this novel a dozen times throughout my life and I still love it every time. It's a classic. Low suspense, great story, highly recommend.

Zane Grey novels make great youth books due to the era in which they were written. Though not always PC about Native Americans and African Americans, and some of which are anti-Mormon, they're clean and represent a time in our history written from a perspective not much separated from the events. in other words, like watching an old movie, you sometimes have to be able to set aside our modern sensibilities and remember the era in which they were written. But you don't have to worry about sex, magic spells, or drug use.

If you like this one, next read The Dude Ranger and The Last Wagon Train.

childhood summer memories
By Curious Reader
As a child, I would spend much of the summer at my grandparents' house. This little gem was a part of my grandfather's library. Having it for my own brings back those days. It seems to be one of the least available Zane Grey titles and I'm not sure why. It's the story of a young outlaw pulled into a life of crime by an outlaw father and a terrible skill with a gun. When he first leaves that life, he is rescued from rangers by a girl and begins his road to redemption. He later has a chance to repay that debt and in the process redeems and entire range. It's a wonderful book to curl up with under a tree or sitting on a porch swing.

Ride the Man Down
By Charles Wheeler
The informatiion we are given about the book really isn't enough to make a full review of the edition of the book. Grosset and Dunlap editions of Zane Grey are highly collectable, especially the Great Western Editions printed during the 1950's and 1960's with the colorful mylar dust covers; these were mostly sold to libraries. As to this book: In the forward of this book, Zane Grey poses a question which he attempts to answer with this novel: What became of so many desperate outlaws who were never heard of again? From this single query which he asked himself, Zane Grey produces one of his best works of historical fiction. "Ride the Man Down!" was the cry of the Texas Rangers whenever an outlaw would escape, and the Texas Rangers were kind of like the Royal Canadian Mounted Police--they always got there man--almost. Wade Holden, but with a new name, Tex Brandon, and added facial hair, a beard, rides far and wide in search of someplace he could live out his days, live down his past, and he finds it on an Arizona ranch. Their he is introduced to the daughter of the ranch owner, Jacqueline Pencarrow, and they fall in love, yet he fears, "the step on his trail". How this is resolved make for an exceptional novel, a triumph of human spirit and emotion, as seen through the eyes and heart of someone who can't believe in the possible. As one of his later works, this book excels in every aspect--speech, description, characterization, plot, and resolution. Five of Five Stars without question!

The Art of Making Fermented Sausages, by Stanley Marianski

The majority of books written on making sausages do not tackle the subject of fermented sausages at all. The topic is limited to a statement that this is an advanced field of sausage making which is not recommended for an amateur sausage maker. Well, the main reason for writing this book was that the authors did not share this opinion. On the contrary, they believed that any hobbyist could make wonderful salami at home, if he only knew how. Highly technical papers were published in Food Technology journals which unfortunately were written in very difficult terms. Thus the idea of bridging the technology gap that existed between Meat Science and the requirements of the typical hobbyist was born. With more information obtainable every day, and commercial starter cultures available to the public, there is little reason to abstain from making quality salamis at home, regardless of the climate and outside conditions.

Review
There is both an art and a science to the making of fermented sausages. And both will be found within pages of Stanley and Adam Marianski's "The Art of Making Fermented Sausages", a 272-page compendium of illustrated, step-by-step instructions that will enable even the most novice culinary hobbyist with all the information the non-specialist general reader will need to produce quality meats that would grace any dining occasion with friends and family. Readers will learn how to control meat acidity and remove excess moisture; select proper temperatures for fermenting, smoking and drying; both understand and exercise effective control over fermentation process; choose appropriate starter cultures and make both traditional and fast-fermented products; select and operate the proper equipment, safety measures, and more. Of special note is extensive section featuring fifty-one fermented sausage recipes. A superbly organized, unique, and highly recommended addition to personal and professional culinary collections.- The Midwest Book Review

About the Author
Stanley Marianski is the author of eleven books which include topics on meat smoking, pickling and making alcoholic beverages. Stanley actively participates in many forums and conferences related to meat smoking; he is a regular participant of the Wedliny Domowe National Conference in Poland where purveyors of meat products get the opportunity to showcase their goods. His main objective in writing his books which always contain diagrams is to help the reader "understand the sausage making process" and then "create his own recipes." His passion for creating unique sausage blends have been handed down from generations and he looks forward to continue sharing this passion with sons who also co-authored most of his books.

Classic Marianski Brothers Sausage Book
By James Ellsworth
I have the 'Bookmagic' (2008) revised edition of 'The Art of Making Fermented Sausages, in addition to other sausage making books by the brothers.

Maybe the best way into reviewing this book is to ask 'who would/should buy it?' Any 'foodie' who is curious about where the pepperoni on their pizza came from will learn a lot about the whole class of 'fermented meat sausages.' The same goes for customers at local deli counters in mega-marts who are buying a range of salamis. 'Home-style' and commercial methods and chemicals are explained from the practical standpoint of which substance does what important thing in producing flavour while promoting food safety. 'Aspirational' (want-to, someday) sausage makers will find a usable, detailed guide to the equipment list that will be the major barrier to most of us in making fermented sausage at home. The 'easy' part of making fermented sausage is the chemistry--for practical purposes, the cure mixes and starter cultures so clearly explained by the authors. 'Meatheads'--meat fanatics--will definitely want this book on their shelves--for the (some) fifty classic recipes for fermented sausages, even including one or two from the Asian sausage kitchen. The emphasis in the recipe section is definitely European, northern and southern.

The book begins with a workmanlike 'history' of fermented meats. The brothers introduce 'New Concepts' including what we now know about controlling available water, pH, temperature and humidity to produce fermented sausage. We are introduced to 'more than we need to understand' material about types of bacteria, how they multiply and what controls that multiplication, color and flavour-forming reactions and the like. In chapter four, sausage makers will learn plenty about the two basic approaches to controlling bacteria while producing color and flavour: slow fermentation and fast fermentation. The 'liberating stuff' comes in chapter five, with a practical overview of 'starter cultures', the key to modern production at home or in the factory, of quality fermented sausages. The recipe section includes items I have never tasted, let alone made. Items I have made or tasted in artisanal production include: cervelat, chorizo, farmer sausage, Medwurst, Merguez, Braunschweiger and Summer Sausage. Well, I have also eaten Mortadella, plenty of Pepperoni, Genoa Salami, Salchichon and Thuringer sausages. A reader will have a very fine understanding of how each and every one of these sausages is made. The book abounds with helpful notes and technical tables, with source attribution for any true sausage maker who can make the equipment to venture into these subjects.

I must come back to the 'equipment list.' Home handymen will not have any problems in following the Marianski brothers' descriptions/photographs for converting a foam insulated cabinet (old refrigerator) to make a temperature/humidity-controlled tool/environment for home-aging cuts of beef, curing hams or for making a whole range of fermented sausage products. Having dedicated refrigerator space for long-term drying and curing of sausages is also stressed in the book. With fermented sausage products, control of temperature during every step of processing from 'breaking down' larger cuts of meat through grinding and on into fermentation is critical. Equally important, measuring pH (acid-base continuum) in the meat and controlling and measuring humidity (which needs to change at various stages of fermentation and drying) requires some simple and inexpensive instruments that will not be found around the house. Unfortunately, it does not seem that all of this equipment comes from the commercial marketplace in any affordable package sized for the 'home' sausage producer. If you want to make sausage and are handy, this is the book for you!

What makes this a Marianski Brothers' 'classic?' They are thorough but repetitive about processes and chemistry, as other reviewers have noted. If YOU get the point they are making, move on and glance over the same/similar material the next time it comes up. I feel the authors use repetition as a teaching tool. Above all, they aim to produce instructional books about their craft. In the end, all the 'chemistry' is 'nice to know' and you will be more comfortable with whatever you pick up about 'why' as well as 'how', but it comes down to using careful measurements of ingredients listed in their recipes and following recommended procedures. Our forefathers weren't food scientists either.

Find where you fit on my suggested continuum and, if you see yourself anywhere, you will want this book.

Needs an editor and a proofreader, but still a bargain
By Larbo
Like other recent books by the Marianski's this one is self-published, through Outskirts Press, and it clearly has not benefited from the services of a professional editor or proofreader. The book is littered with grammar mistakes, typographical errors, and odd locutions. The way the text is organized, they end up covering the same subjects from multiple angles, with the result that they repeat themselves over and over. Sometimes the organization simply seems haphazard, with "notes" appearing at the end of a section which could be more accurately labeled "afterthoughts." The information presented is clear and accurate; just don't expect a gripping read.

This book is definitely a useful addition for any other meathead out there wanting to try and make fermented sausages at home. As a book dedicated to this subject, they go deeper into the issues of chemistry, microbiology, sanitation, and equipment (for smoking, fermenting, and drying) that all affect the quality of the finished product. The second part contains 50 detailed recipes, with precise measurements in grams, so that even a relative newcomer to this craft can proceed with confidence. This book usefully bridges the gap between simpler cookbooks and advanced textbooks such as Fidel Toldr's Handbook of Fermented Meat and Poultry (which sells for $200). At $20, even with all its faults on its head, this book is a bargain.

To read my full review, go to my website.

Update, 7/8/09: Just heard from Stanley Marianski that they have revised this book and it's coming out from a new publisher (Bookmagic). If you decide to buy, this is the edition you want-it has an index!

Love the "ART" provided by this book, I give it 10 Stars...
By Paul Schwimmer
Bought the book thinking yeah right...try to make salami in Peoria, AZ with our triple digit summer temperatures. When I received my books (i.e. also bought the Marianski's Meat Smoking Book too...), I can't seem to put either of them down. It's full of good down to earth information. My God, whoever gives this book less than 4 stars needs their head examined. It is so full of good information put together by a remarkable man and his sons. I mean think about it...this art of Salami making is thousands of years old, masked in mystery like an ancient guild, hidden away by those select few. The mystery is now solved and ready to be explored. The Art of Salami making is the most challenging, most time consuming "art" of sausage making. Like any art dealing with fermentation, especially meat. It requires dedication, discipline and a basic understanding of this natural process. The Marianski Family has my deepest respect, because they have written this book with a lot of dedication to the "ART." They have given me and you perhaps the opportunity to glimpse something beautiful and natural. A glimpse into the past, into the natural order of things, the way it is intended. Think of these men as having Doctorates in Practical Microbiology. This book is suitable for the Novice up through the Purist. Myself being an Engineer with 35 years in the work place find it fascinating reading. It is so detailed on just about every aspect of salami making, yet easy to read and understand. This book is suitable for those who are frugal and those with more money than brains. Most importantly, the Marianski's stress the safety aspects associated with this "Art." You're given the tools to deal with a food preparation process that could be very harmful if not followed explicitly. People at my work think I'm nuts, because I've always got my nose in this book. I've made Homebrew, wine, cheese, jerky, sausages and I have never read anything as detailed and understandable as this book. I can't wait to get started making salami with my sons and build some family traditions for my own legacy. If I could, I would give this book 10 stars. Good luck my friends in your art of making fermented sausages. And as a man once told me..."Relax, don't worry have a Homebrew" and I did.....

Syzygy: Reflections on the Monastery of the Seven Rays, by Tau Palamas

The two worlds of Voudon and Gnosis merged together within the unique expression of a religious community called the Monastery of the Seven Rays. Having a history that is as colorful and mysterious as the variety of individuals involved in this esoteric movement of the spirit, the Monastery stands apart from traditional expressions of monasticism in the East and in the West by existing on a physical plane, but more especially by also being a psycho-spiritual locale, accessible to all who knock upon her celestial doors. For each Postulant of this Monastery there is a particular work to do, a particular Gnostic space to dwell within, and a particular sacred injunction to fulfill for the betterment of the globe. SYZYGY by Tau Palamas is one such legacy. It is simply the reflections of one student of this delightful and challenging superstructure of mind-stuff--The Monastery of the Seven Rays."This true Labor of Love offers one of the best introductions to our School and Work that we've read. From the curious seeker to the seasoned Pilgrim on the Path, there is guidance and illumination in this volume which will speak time and again to the deepest levels of spiritual longing...With gratitude to Tau Palamas, we whole heartedly recommend SYZYGY as one of the best books of the year!" --Kyle Fite, SGM, Ordo Templi Orientis Antiqua & La Couleuvre Noire"A wonderful exposition and elaboration of the Monastery of Seven Rays material through the eyes of a true modern-day Christian mystic! I highly recommend it to anyone studying the work of Michael Bertiaux, but the Opus stands alone in that you could create a system of Work from this book alone! For those interested in Martinism and Ecclesiastical Gnosticism this book is also of great value, and certainly compliments the work of L'Ordre Martinesiste de Chenu (it is on the reading list)! Highly recommended!"--Kevin Davis, Sov. Insp. V, Ordre Martinesiste de Chenu

Review
"Your book, Syzygy, is terrific! I see it as very, very much in the Martinist spirit. It is a valid and powerful emanation of the Monastery of the Seven Rays mysticism."~Michael Bertiaux, author of The Voudon Gnostic Workbook "+PALAMAS, who has studied in the 'Monastery of the Seven Rays' and deeply digested its teachings, provides much illumination in this beautiful book. he not only presents the Monastery's teachings in an accessible way, but also correlates them with more traditional monastic teachings and practices. He then provides helpful and clear directions for the person who chooses to move beyond reading to experience. Further, his art accompanies each chapter, providing further potent gateways to the mysteries discussed herein."~Bishop John Plummer, PhD, author of The Many Paths of the Independent Sacramental Movement

From the Back Cover
"'Syzygy' is the appropriate name for this text, yoking together as it does a wide variety of divergent streams. This is at one and the same time a deeply personal account of Tau Palamas' own spiritual journey and a rigorous examination of the Monastery of the Seven Rays' practice in relation to other currents and approaches. The journey is a sometimes dizzying one as Tau Palamas reels from one subject to the next, and from personal reflections to deeply theoretical speculations, the whole thing supplemented with a parade of stark and arresting images from his own paintbrush. This is a demanding text, perhaps at times too adventurous; one certainly not for the tyro. Its ultimate effect, however, is properly magical, and no one interested in contemporary magical praxis and Bertiaux's work will be left disappointed."
~Abathur V, Grand Master of the Friary/OSF

"A tour de force of creative synthesis, this extraordinary book sets out to fuse one of the most avant-garde branches of contemporary Western esotericism with the traditions of monastic prayer, contemplation and ritual, and carries out this more than usually demanding task with aplomb. Students of the mysteries weary of the rehashing of familiar teachings that dominates today's occult publishing scene will find it a welcome if dizzying breath of fresh air."
~John Michael Greer, Grand Archdruid of the Ancient Order of Druids in America

"Syzygy is a fascinating exploration of the Voudon-Gnostic philosophy of Michael-Paul Bertiaux and the Monastery of the Seven Rays. The author, a Gnostic Bishop, takes us through his practice and experiences, telling us about meditation and prayer, Saints and spirits, magick and healing and even death and the dead. In the second half of the book, he offers practical ritual techniques to experience what he calls "the Otherworld" for oneself. I suspect students of the Voudon-Gnostic coursework will find this text an invaluable companion for their studies."
~Aaron Leitch, author of Secrets of the Magickal Grimoires and The Essential Enochian Grimoire.

inspired
By Jason R. Carpenter
I am a student of the Monastery of Seven Rays, first and foremost, and that colors this review. I ordered Syzygy at the suggestion of my mentor in the M7R after several months of financial difficulty it reached my hands a couple weeks ago only to be devoured.

Knowing there were two editions, a full color hardcover and a b&w paperback, I opted for the hardcover and the artwork is gorgeous but sometimes the size obscures some of the beautiful detail in the paintings. The art is stunning in spite of this and fits very neatly into the school of iconography, images of saints and Christ abound and to some these may make you scratch your head as many think the M7R is a Thelemic or Typhonian order and as this wonderful book shows, it is not not a Thelemic order but is rather what you need it to be. People of all walks of life find their way BACK to the Monastery, Christians, Thelemites, Muslims, traditional African practitioners will all find a home and something to remember in the work of the M7R and that is something that Palamas makes clear in this book.

The authors background in Christian mysticism and the monastic lifestyle shines through in this book as he examines in hyperkinetic style the work of the Monastery, examining the Voudon Gnostic Workbook from that particular approach and it is inspiring to read about, drawing you into the system he lays out, painting a vista that is beautiful and elegant and especially makes you want to be a part of.

When I got this book, I had reached a stumbling block in my own work with the M7R material. An impasse. In reading this book I was inspired in how to approach my lessons and broke through the barrier I'd been struggling with opening up new roads in my work. I don't think any review could do it justice without sounding like a sycophant for Tau Palamas and how much this book helped me. So let's look at it from two perspectives.

Are you a student of the Monastery? Of Michael Bertiaux's work? If so, this book should be on your shelf alongside the VGW and Voudon Gnosis by David Beth. Where this book comes into play is the approach. Comparing it to Beth's book, Voudon Gnosis, Syzygy is more about the spiritual side, the way of life of the adherent to the Monastery teachings and deepening that experience. Beth's book is about the Magick, hardcore magical theory and examination through the lens of his Merciless Path school of thought. It is in contrasting Beth's essay on Love in Voudon Gnosis and Palamas' chapter on Caritas that we find the root difference in these two approaches. Read both closely and everything spins in wildly different directions.

With Beth's work you get the sense that the OTOA and LCN are some sort of hardcore, left hand path movement. Palamas though, you see the right hand path, rather the middle path as the community has moved so far to the left in the last ten years that the middle is the right, expressed so beautifully, and succinctly, that we are reminded of the tradition of not just the Monk orders, but also of the Rosicrucians. Bertiaux's work puts a strong emphasis on healing, one that could be missed if one obsesses over time travel, sexual gnosis, aiwaz physics, Means, and Voudontronic Computers too much in their exploration of the system he lays out in his published and unpublished writings. Previous writers on Bertiaux and his work have missed so much of the beauty of the spirituality he lays bare because of their focus on the magical power and this is, I think, misguided and hopefully rectified by Syzygy. The chapter on Caritas alone brought a tear to my eye because of it's devotion.

The second approach is of the non Voudon Gnostic. Is this book good for those of us not following that path? Yes. Emphatically yes. Palamas is writing about a mindful existence, developing consciously as a spiritual being and opening up, giving over and experiencing God, the HGA etc. The exercises in part two of the book could be easily adapted to other religions with some thought. The first part of the book which discusses various aspects of monastic lifestyles places, to me, an emphasis on Lectio Divina, reading of scripture in a meditative, purposeful manner and retiring to a silent Contemplation... For a Thelemite, this would be reading the Holy Books, a Muslim, the Quran, and just becoming aware of what you just read and accepting it. And even then, this book should be read in that same manner.... Sides back in for another reading.

EXCELLENT text on a personal journey through Voudon Gnosis
By Adam Grossheider
When I first entered the world of Voudon Gnosis, I was both entranced and overwhelmed by the strangeness of it all. After finding myself oddly drawn to it back and forth for a period of several long months, I also had the pleasure of speaking to +Palamas himself and a few others on this path. One of the first things I noticed was something that I can barely describe with words but as being an 'artistic' attraction. Seeing how these practitioners resonated with this path on such a creative level was inspiring. The beautifully mystical artwork of +Palamas, Sean Woodward, and Kyle Fite was communicating more than just wonderful talents to me, it was a sign of the mediumistic catalyst of the work itself and it spoke of an experiential Gnosis. As a writer, musician, and artist myself with talents that have for the last several years gone into hibernation, suddenly I felt myself with a surge of awakening creativity and a thirst to truly experience a relationship with the world of the Saints, Spirits, and Lwa.

Upon diving into "Syzygy", not only is it helping me understand the M7R coursework and the Voudon Gnostic Workbook, but I found that this path was not out to recruit anyone, it was calling those who had already been there! Suddenly I found myself working with this current on a daily basis and learning so much about myself in many mysitcal ways.

I found myself in luck as +Palamas reveals his grounded background in the various currents of the Western Mystery Tradition and in a solid practical esoteric Christian faith. In this book, the Freemason, Martinist, Thelemite, and Gnostic Christian will note how the author is able to synthesize his explanations through these various paths, and to make it plain that while his own personal approach is not required for the OTOA-LCN, he lets his own practice become a living example of how the path works through YOU as an individual, not the other way around. We are literally becoming who were meant to be, and it is a lifelong return that even as I, a humble beginner, have found much inspiration for. I fully expect this and further gnostic realizations of an esoteric nature to continue and to grow more personal.

The first half of the book gives wonderful advice on how votaries of the Monastery are able to become more receptive and open to powerful occult channels of the spirit world, and effectively becoming more receptive to themselves! In the Western magical traditions, there is a tendency to become prideful and egocentric with the theory that we have tomes of rituals and lists of spirits for us to call upon like we are merely choosing from a spice rack for dinner. +Palamas makes it clear that our choices on the occult path must develop a real and honest relationship, rather than the standoffish mentality of Master and Servant, Magician and Spirit. Cultivating a real mutual relationship opens hidden whispers of gnosis and becomes a realization of our true selves and of our True Wills. Without one wasted word, a greatly succinct effort is made to elaborate on the concept of "living in a constant conversation or dialogue with divinity", as Michael Bertiaux puts it. Training our Wills to become magnetically receptive in this way is an esoteric way of life, not a practice that one chooses to dust off from off the shelf whenever we feel the need for change. This path IS change, it IS transformation, and it IS gnosis. The cyclic nature of purification is a necessity, and these intensely personal trials are direct evidence of a shift in consciousness and a liberation of the energy that comes from finding ourselves.

The second half of the book is dedicated to practice, and it is an excellent complement to the great theory and understanding that is established in previous chapters. His Ritual Act of Oblation is a powerful way to connect with the current and ceremonially establish our intentions. The Breviary, based upon the Catholic Liturgy of the Hours, is a great example of making time itself sacred in our daily lives, to constantly devote oneself and at the same time remind ourselves to keep our awareness open to Divinity. The section on the 16 Saints gives an introduction to the attributes and correspondences between their respectively syncretized Lwa and tell us how to immediately start working with them, and the author fully encourages us not to wait, but to dive in. Finally, the closing chapter on using the Psalms is a great way to add biblical mysticism to the template that is provided in the VGW. We are encouraged to start working immediately, and the ceremonies are not overly complicated in any way. They require minimal setup, but are designed to help us apply the inner changes suggested in the first half of the text.

Personally, when I really dig into a book I often read chapters over many times, and whether or not this is due to a learning deficiency I don't know, but in reading texts of an esoteric and occult nature, in which were are practically drowning in the West, I find myself absorbing different layers of information each time. To me, this is not any sort of obstacle, this is a gift, a chance to sink deeper into the text and experience its ideas and apply them, rather than just reading the words on an intellectual level. For Syzygy, I am now on my second reading of the book and recognizing other aspects that I have been experiencing with practice since my first reading. In the decision to keep a highlighter close by this time, practically the whole damn book is yellow now! I am sure that +Palamas is glad to see fellow students of the Mysteries making good use of his book though. My one and ONLY regret is that I bought the paperback edition that does not feature color renditions of his wonderful artwork, although I may remedy that situation ;)

Syzygy is a book for both the student and the adept, even if one has not been fully introduced to Voudon Gnosis. As this is +Palamas' personal journey, it is more than evident that his passion for the Great Work shines through in his examples as he shares with us his knowledge, it surely is inspirational for us to find the same passion in our own ways. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Mediatations on the Voduon Gnostic Path
By Mr. S. A. Woodward
With SYZYGY Tau Palamas approaches the cosmic pairings of Michael Bertiaux’s known and lesser known works, namely the Voudon Gnostic Workbook (VGW) and the Monastery of the Seven Rays (M7R) through the filter of classical monasticism.

It is a lens that fits with the model of the M7R as a traditional religious community, although as Palamas is keen to point out, “We are dealing with a wide-open celestial sphere, via the terrestrial, that is polymorphic and exquisite in design and which has much to teach us about ourselves and the Universe. We simply must be true to ourselves and trust in our own resources to decide upon what manner of working we may embark. No one can do this for you, though they may offer pointers” (p82)

In adopting the monastic approach to the teachings of the M7R the work is divided into a first part of chapters which address different aspects of the pious lifestyle and ritual and culminates in a practical second half which outlines rituals of Oblation, the application of the Psalms as litany, prayer and conjuration as well as an outline of 16 Saints and their areas of influence.

It is clear in the attention to such diverse areas as Scala Dei, Gyrovagi, Memento Mori and Caritas as well as Syzygy, Good and Bad UFOs and Ojas that Palamas has experienced the balance of worldly and unworldly, of the revelations of gnostic inner spaces provided by contemplation of the M7R and those of the VGW. For anyone seeking direct quotations from the M7R teaching papers, they will not be found here as Palamas prefers instead to quote from the recently republished VGW. In many ways this is an added bonus and the VGW itself can at times appear impenetrable, itself a fortress of the mysteries, yet Palamas exposes the underlying principles in easily understood language, backed by example.

The principle of Syzygy (of pairings) is reflected throughout the work, no less in the juxtaposition of Palamas’ text with his own artwork, many examples of which illustrate the work. The formulation of a gnostic artist is a key indicator in the Voudon Gnostic tradition, of which this work is an exegesis. It is a particular conduit used by the Spirits and Guardians of the tradition both as comunicatiion and testimony. There is a reference to this on page 110, quoting the VGW;

"The gnostic artist is an instrument for divine and angelic activity in what he does, for he contacts those highest levels of consciousness and being which religion designates as the divine and/or the angelic." - Michael Bertiaux (p110)

Whilst this book is subtitled ‘Reflections on the Monastery of the Seven Rays’ it is clear that these themselves are ripples in the rich and deep ontic pool of esoteric exposition created and elucidated by Michael Bertiaux. In the Introduction, is a statement concerning the M7R;

“The Monastery of the Seven Rays exists on multiple planes. it has a physical locale in the home of Michael-Paul Bertiaux in Chicago , IL USA”

As one who has had the privilege of visiting its physical locale, I can vouch for this book being a true reflection of the energies which emanate from there.

Finally, Palamas touches on one of the profoundest mysteries of the M7R when he states “ votaries of the M7R are returning to an unfinished work, to a rough ashlar, to a portion of their very isness that remains undone and MUST be completed now or at some other point in history.” (p70)

With this book Palamas has provided an insight and physical totem which will assist anyone who is returning or desires to understand what makes the Voudon Gnostic path such a vibrant and dynamic experience. I would recommend a relationship with this book as the first of many such fruitful relationships which the gnosis provides.
