PHILLIP C. NAYLOR is Professor of History at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he directed the Western Civilization program. His previous books include The Historical Dictionary of Algeria and France and Algeria: A History of Decolonization and Transformation. He is coeditor of the Journal of North African Studies.

For the casual reader looking to get a concise historical background on North Africa, this is an excellent choice. Well written and researched with lots of suggestions for further reading on topics related to the various countries in the region.
I felt that I learned a lot about the political dynamics of the region both historically and, more importantly, those still operational today

An important introductory survey

I'm giving this book five stars for the niche it fills, viz., a readable introduction to a neglected subject. Given the book's scope, I'm sure that specialists will find places to quibble. However, if you are teaching, or learning about, North Africa this is a book you have to consider. It is well written, well argued, and well organized, and, to my knowledge, has no serious competitor in monograph form.

Great history of an area we should all know about

This is a concise and clear history of North Africa, the ancient civilizations, the nomadic tribes and cultures and the political geography that lead to today's news coverage of all these countries. Everyone should read this book to grasp the complexities and differences in cultural and political outlook in North Africa as opposed to North America.
