The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival (Vintage Departures), by John Vaillant

A gripping story of man pitted against nature’s most fearsome and efficient predator.

Outside a remote village in Russia’s Far East a man-eating tiger is on the prowl. The tiger isn’t just killing people, it’s murdering them, almost as if it has a vendetta. A team of trackers is dispatched to hunt down the tiger before it strikes again. They know the creature is cunning, injured, and starving, making it even more dangerous. As John Vaillant re-creates these extraordinary events, he gives us an unforgettable and masterful work of narrative nonfiction that combines a riveting portrait of a stark and mysterious region of the world and its people, with the natural history of nature’s most deadly predator.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, August 2010: Deep in the frigid Siberian wilderness, an Amur tiger hunts. Fearsome strength is at the command of a calculating mind that relentlessly stalks its newest prey: man. Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the taiga, John Vaillant provides an unforgettable true account of a lethal collision between man and beast in a remote Russian village during the late 1990's. At its core, The Tiger is the story of a desperate poacher who picked the wrong tiger to accost. Yet it engages the reader on political, socioeconomic, and conservation fronts in order to explain how the stage was set for a deadly showdown. It's a gutsy approach that could easily lead to chaotic storytelling, but Vaillant is careful to keep the bone-chilling storyline taut by capturing the intensity of an animal worthy of our greatest respect and deepest fears. --Dave Callanan

Christopher McDougall Reviews The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival

Christopher McDougall is the author of national bestseller Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes and the Greatest Race the World has Never Seen. He is a former war correspondent for the Associated Pressand a three-time National Magazine Award finalist. He's written for magazines ranging from Esquire and The New York Times Magazine to Outside and Men’s Health. He does his own running among the Amish farms around his home in rural Pennsylvania. Read his review of The Tiger:

A few years ago, I interviewed a Delaware state trooper named Butch LeFebvre who’d been assigned to investigate rumors that a mountain lion was roaming the outskirts of Wilmington. It was silly, of course--big cats had been wiped out on the East Coast more than a century ago. But just to be safe, LeFebvre strapped on night-vision goggles, loaded a rifle with a tranquilizer dart, and set off into the woods behind the Du Pont Country Club. By 3 A.M, he’d spotted nothing, so he headed back to his truck. The next evening, he returned to the same spot for another look--and found paw tracks following his footprints all the way back to where he’d parked. LeFebvre was an experienced hunter, but he learned something that night: one killer out there was doing a great job of watching and thinking and learning, and it wasn’t him.

To this day, the Wilmington lion has never attacked or even emerged from the suburban shadows. Not so lucky, however, is the Siberian village in John Vaillant’s chilling The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival. In 1997, deep in the remote Russian backcountry, a gigantic Amur tiger begins acting like the only thing more savage than a wild animal--us. It doesn’t just attack villagers; it hunts them, picking its targets like a hitman with a contract, at one point even dragging a mattress out of a shack so it can lie comfortably in wait until the woodsman returns home. A few days later, the woodsman’s horrified friends discover remains “so small and so few they could have fit in a shirt pocket.”

Vaillant is as masterful with science as he is with suspense. We feel what it’s like to be in a tiny settlement cut off from the rest of the world, at the mercy of a beast so swift that it can’t be seen until its mouth bites down on your face. Tigers, Vaillant explains, are nature’s last word in mammalian weapons design. Big as three NFL linebackers bundled into one, armed with claws longer than fingers and jaws rated on a strength-scale used for dinosaurs, tigers are built like missiles and can out-swim, out-climb, out-fox and out-run just about anything that breathes. That’s the bad news; the worse news is, they’re also armed with memory and invisibility. “I have seen all the other animals,” one poacher says, “but I have never seen a tiger--not once.”

What enthralled me as much as the deadly cat-and-man game at the center of The Tiger are the side-stories that inform it. Vaillant introduces us to characters like Jakob von Uexkull, a Victorian-era baron-turned-physiologist who specialized in umwelt: the lost art of immersing yourself in another creature’s psyche. You crouch to the height of the animal you’re seeking, learning to see the world through its eyes, inhale scents through its nostrils, feel cool earth and crushed leaves beneath its padded paws. There are hunters in Siberia, Vaillant tells us, who can sniff the woods and identify animals by smell. These maestros believe killing a tiger without cause is as vile as murder, and such a violation of natural order that calamity is destined to follow. They feel such kinship with the big cats that they’ll even share their meals by leaving hunks of meat in the woods, convinced the tigers will re-pay them in kind with a deer haunch when times are lean. They see themselves as blood brothers of the Amurs--but as Vaillant shows us, no one fights more fiercely than relatives.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. The grisly rampage of a man-eating Amur, or Siberian, tiger and the effort to trap it frame this suspenseful and majestically narrated introduction to a world that few people, even Russians, are familiar with. Northeast of China lies Russias Primorye province, "the meeting place of four distinct bioregions"–taiga, Mongolian steppes, boreal forests, and Korean tropics--and where the last Amur tigers live in an uneasy truce with an equally diminished human population scarred by decades of brutal Soviet politics and postperestroika poverty. Over millennia of shared history, the indigenous inhabitants had worked out a tenuous peace with the Amur, a formidable hunter that can grow to over 500 pounds and up to nine feet long, but the arrival of European settlers, followed by decades of Soviet disregard for the wilds, disrupted that balance and led to the overhunting of tigers for trophies and for their alleged medicinal qualities. Vaillant (The Golden Spruce) has written a mighty elegy that leads readers into the lair of the tiger and into the heart of the Kremlin to explain how the Amur went from being worshipped to being poached. From Bookmarks Magazine
The Amur tiger, weighing 500 pounds with four-inch claws and now numbering only around 400 in the Russian Far East, is certainly a formidable creature, and Vaillant gives the animal the respect it deserves in this unusual true-crime tale. Critics agreed that The Tiger is nature writing and reporting at its best, mesmerizing and insightful into both the threatened natural and human worlds. "Think of Vaillant as a younger version of John McPhee," wrote the Seattle Times, "but on steroids." The only complaint came from the Oregonian, which accused Vaillant of unnecessary padding. But all reviewers appreciated Vaillant's moral and highly recommended the book: "When you murder a tiger, you not only kill a strong and beautiful beast, you extinguish a passionate soul" (Washington Post).

Gripping and informative
By Alan Mazer
Someone asked me recently what sort of non-fiction I like to read, and I had to think about it. I have a few niche areas that I enjoy, but generally all I ask of a book is that it keep me engaged and give me something to think about. This approach means that I read a lot of books in areas where I have no expertise and little real interest, merely because someone did a great job of presenting the material and I got hooked. "The Tiger" is one of these books.

Primarily it's the story of a tiger, hungry, injured, and irritated, which starts killing off the members of a Russian community, and of the men tasked with tracking the tiger and killing it. But there's a lot more here, too: interesting background on tigers and other animals, and how they hunt; the culture of the Russian Far East, including issues surrounding the Chinese-Russian border; the effects of perestroika on poorer Russians. And it's all woven together in a manner that made me want to keep reading.

I was particularly intrigued by how recent the events in the story are, being from the late 1990s. The people depicted are clearly on the fringes of Russian society, living literally hand to mouth just to stay alive. That someone could have a TV and other modern conveniences, and still rely for their survival on hunting small game and gathering pine cones, was not something that had occurred to me. Also interesting were the observations on how, through many years, tigers and people have lived together peacefully in the Far East, yet in a balance so fragile that either may be forced to hunt the other just to survive. And of course there are some fascinating statistics on tigers, both their declining numbers, and their physical abilities.

While this book is footnoted and has an extensive bibliography, I would suggest it for anyone who simply likes a good adventure story. It's a great read!

A Lyrical, Insightful, and rather Exhaustive Analysis
By Bryan Newman
This is far more than just an animal-eats-man thriller like Alaska Bear Tales. It does have a rather small story of a man eating tiger terrorizing a community, but it balloons out, covering all the eddies of history, natural history, economics, and culture that moved the characters to this moment where their worlds collide.

The story could easily be covered in 160 words on page two of a newspaper as some AP wire from Russia. Or in a narrative book it would take maybe 20 pages or so pages. But here the author brings nearly every back story to light in an amazing parade and alignment of stars that borders on fate. The Soviets annexing Northern Manchuria, Defending it from China, bringing Russians to the far East, the crumbling of Soviet systems, the crippling impoverishment of the community, the open markets to the South, the Chinese appetite for tiger products... Everything lines up to bring this confrontation in a way too clear cut for fiction.

I will not say that this book is a slow read, because I had problems putting it down, but at times it was frustrating that the core story of the tiger never seemed to move closer. It reads like a local history text, a biographic series of many of the main characters and a natural history account of tigers all blended together. I don't think I have ever come away from a book feeling like I knew the context of events better. The image created of post Perestroika Russia alone is worth the price of the book.

However, I can see some people being turned off by all the detours and side streets the book takes. This is not a straight narrative. By the time I knew the end was near, I felt almost like the hunters tracking the tiger, just willing the confrontation to come. And the climax was worth it. The author uses cinematic timing and fated suspense right up to the last moment.

I highly recommend it. Not as a riveting storyline, but much more - a riveting, all encompassing history. Occasionally the auther went a little over the top with his description of tigers, but I can never look at a tiger in a zoo the same way again.

This Tiger really burns bright
By Gary Greenberg
The remarkable thing about John Vaillant's The Tiger is not that it's a total page-turner, or that he manages to stuff the Tiger with so much fascinating natural and political history that you come away with three or four points added to your IQ, or that his lush descriptions are sensuous without being cloying and muscular without being macho, or that his characters are indelible and engaging and worthy of The Dirty Dozen or Where Eagles Dare, or even that the tiger and its hunters will relentlessly stalk your consciousness when you aren't reading the book (quite a trick in attention-challenged times). It's that you will, without even knowing it, and even if you don't want to, find yourself suddenly occupying the tiger's world, and seeing it through his eyes, feeling its wounds and its anguish and its hatred, and, above all, rooting for it against your fellow humans. Let this book hunt you down and pounce on you. You won't regret it.

UM.... If you have to use this text find a new accounting program.
By geoff
This book is poorly written out-dated and irrelevant to accounting. There are 65 misspellings 52 grammar errors in this text. Much of the information on technology is from the early 80's. The terminology includes things like floppy disk and has a picture of a 5.25 disk. It talks about other legacy systems like tape drives as though they were the new modern systems. I learned more returning this rental to Amazon then from the pages of the text.

Needs Updating in Acctg Processes
By Joyce
For a book on Information Systems, I would have expected the examples on accounting functions to be more up-to-date with current business practices rather than the archaic processes that were included.
Unfortunately, my instructor taught "by the book" and I was forced to relearn all the old ways of doing things such as forgoing using a lockbox for receiving cash and having two people in the mail room open the checks and manually write a deposit slip. Who has time for that?
Have the authors of this book not heard of process improvement, automation, Six Sigma? Trust me, the companies out there certainly have and that's what employees' success is judged against.
Teaching college students who have never worked in an Accounting Dept a process that hasn't been used in years is doing them a disservice. The Universities should expect current version textbooks to actually be updated with current business practices and then teach current business practices. Challenge themselves to actually produce graduates who won't feel behind the curve when they're out looking for a job up against those who have work experience. Put them ahead of the curve by teaching them Best Practice for their field. What a concept. It starts with truly up-to-date textbooks.

OK book for learning AIS
By Kari D
I purchased this book for an AIS course. It is an okay book - there is a LOT of vocabulary, and can sometimes feel like information overload. Also, the graphics might be helpful for visual learners, but I wish it broke them down a bit better for verbal learners. I think this may just be the nature of the subject.

Deshi (Connor Burke Martial Arts Book 2), by John Donohue

Asian scholar and black belt artist Connor Burke labors as a deshi—a student under the tutelage of a master warrior— a practice that draws him into the execution-style murder of a Japanese businessman in Brooklyn.

Connor’s brother, an officer in the NYPD, enlists him to decipher the strange calligraphic writing left by the victim at the crime scene. The enigmatic message leads Connor to the lethal samurai heritage of a mysterious martial arts sensei, the foreboding world of a Tibetan clairvoyant, and finally the unknown wilderness of an elite mountain temple—where Connor’s deadliest challenge awaits.

From Publishers Weekly
The execution-style murder of a Japanese businessman, who's shot through the temple while engaged in calligraphy at his Brooklyn home, dramatically opens Donohue's intriguing second martial arts thriller (after 2003's Sensei). Dr. Connor Burke, a history scholar and black belt, gets enlisted by his NYPD detective brother Micky, who's his spiritual polar opposite, to decipher the calligraphic writing left by the victim at the crime scene. The inked message implicates followers of a revered Tibetan lama in this and two other murders. Charged with protecting the lama, who's at the center of a conflict involving a rising charismatic sensei (aka teacher), political threats in Tibet and competing martial arts disciplines, Burke journeys to the lama's reclusive mountain retreat, where he's stalked by a hulking Korean-American named Han. Using an economy of words that echoes the uncluttered atmosphere of the dojo, the traditional Japanese training hall, Donohue glides effortlessly between the disciplined, mystical culture of the martial arts community and the chaotic thrum of the streets. Peppered with musings of Eastern philosophy, gritty cop lingo and occasional understated humor, this mystery with its fresh protagonist will appeal to all kinds of readers, not just martial arts aficionados.

From Booklist
The author follows up his excellent debut, Sensei (2003), with this less successful sequel. Connor Burke, the martial-arts expert, again helps investigate a murder in which martial arts play a key role. But where Sensei ("teacher") featured sharply drawn characters and a unique environment, Deshi ("pupil") seems formulaic by comparison. The main supporting characters are back, a pair of cops (one of whom is Connor's brother), but here their banter is more irritating than entertaining. In the first novel, it seemed entirely plausible that Connor, a civilian, would be brought into a murder investigation; here it feels forced. And the relationship between Connor and his sensei, Yamashita, which was charming in the first book, here seems ponderous. All that being said, this isn't a bad novel; it's just markedly inferior to its predecessor. Not recommendable on its own but worth buying on the strength of its predecessor and the likelihood that the Burke series will be good enough in the long run to justify complete holdings. David Pitt

A decent and very fun read from Donohue
By Clan Lindsey
This novel is going to be a little tougher to critique than Mr. Donohue's first outing, the remarkable "Sensei". I very much enjoyed reading this sequel to that excellent novel and also enjoyed being introduced to the characters again. There were a few flaws with this novel though, and this one felt more like a debut novel than his Sensei did.

As I noted in my review of Sensei, Donohue's protagonist, Connor Burke, is a finely realized and interesting character with substantial depth, complex feelings and motivations, and is an unusual hybrid of both college professor of Asian Studies and martial artist. In Sensei, his actions and reactions, to the unfolding plot events were both sensible and consistent with his character. Within this novel I felt the author stretched that sensibility and consistency a little too far for my comfort.

In this outing Connor, still a thinking man's hero, is drawn into another police investigation because of his unusual background and expertise in martial arts and Asian studies. The investigation, taking place in New York City, revolves around a series of murders of experts in Japanese calligraphy. Events proceed and eventually two dojos (martial arts schools) come into conflict with each other, spiritually and physically. The action scenes are excellent, the writing taut, and the book flows extremely well. In fact, I churned through this one very quickly, ignoring important things in my life clamoring for my attention, and enjoyed myself quite a bit.

I was disapppointed on some levels with this book however, probably because my expectations were so elevated after reading Sensei. Some of the characters in this book are finely realized, complex, believable and interesting. Yet many are not. Additionally some of the situations within the novel felt both forced and contrived and lacked a sense of naturalness and authenticity. Perhaps most disappointing was that the villains felt fairly cartoonish in the end and certainly did not behave rationally nor were their actions internally consistent with their depictations. Clever villains are so much more interesting than stupid ones.

I wish I could whole-heartedly recommend this book as an excellent read, but all I can really say is that it was certainly a fun read and I still enjoyed it despite some flaws. If you liked Sensei then go ahead and read this one, you'll still enjoy the further adventures of Connor Burke. If you haven't read Sensei, but like to read thrillers/mysteries/action adventure then I'd recommend reading Sensei before this book.

From another author
By Arthur Bradley
Let me start by saying that I'm a dedicated fan of this genre. That means of course that I've read Lustbader, Trevanian, Eisler, and now both of Donohue's books. This particular book came by recommendation of my father, also a huge martial arts fan (and fellow practictioner). I can totally respect Donohue's effort, because I know first hand how hard it is to put together a compelling martial arts thriller. I recently published a martial arts novel. My book features a Judo/Kenpo master hunting a world-class sniper whose killing presidential candidates. It's more of a mainstream thriller inspired by Lustabader's early erotic martial arts violence. See "Process of Elimination" if interested. End of shamelesss plug!

As another author writing in this same genre, I was very excited to pick up Donohue's "Sensei" (and then "Deshi"). I posted a review of "Sensei" as well, should you care to read it.

In Deshi, Connor is once again called in by the police (his brother and partner) to help with a murder case. There's a lot going on in the book behind the scenes, involving Chinese spies, a Tibetan Lama, some hired thugs, and a martial artist with something to hide. It's weird for me to even say this, but the complication in the plot sort of gets in the way of the story. Even as I finished the book, and I came to understand who was doing what and why, I was left a bit confused. I guess it's because there really isn't any way to figure out the book until Donohue finally walks you through it. It's not one of those stories where you can pick out clues and figure things out. You simply go along for the ride and then listen quietly as the author finally clues you in. Still, I like the authenticity of the martial arts and can overlook the lackluster feeling that I came away with.

Overall, I liked "Deshi" better than "Sensei." The story is unique, and there is more action. Like his first book, "Deshi" is also a quick read (a couple of hours). But complaints aside, I learned some things, and never put it down until it was finished. I guess that earns it 4 stars (but just barely).

fascinating thriller
By A Customer
Edward Sakura sees the man in his shodo hut on his Brooklyn estate and knows the intruder is going to kill him. Before he dies, he creates a message in calligraphy that reads "spring wind". The police think it is a clue to his murderer and one of the lead detectives brings his brother, martial arts expert Connor Burke, is called into the investigation since he is an expert in things Asian. It is learned that Sakura has sent a calligraphic scroll to Professor Hoddington in Georgia for an evaluation.

The evidence shows the professor ends up murdered by the same person who killed Sakura. The school journalist Kim who gave the scroll to Sakura is found tortured and dead. The man Connor suspects killed the three men is also interested in Connor's Sensei's friend Tibetan monk Changpa Ripache. The killer has ties to the People's Republic of China security forces but they don't know why China would be interested in one outspoken monk. All these events seem to tie back to Kita Tekenobo, an expert in martial arts who wants the scroll destroyed. At an isolated gathering, all the principal players come together but not all of them will leave alive.

DESHI is a fascinating thriller that gives readers an in-depth look at those who practice the martial arts and how mysticism plays a role in the making of a warrior. The protagonist has been tutored by his sensei for many years yet still realizes he has a lot to learn especially how the interaction of eastern philosophy and mysticism creates warriors. The plight of Tibet and the Chinese attempts to destroy Buddhism and the monks who practice it add depth to this creative work of suspense.

Waste of time & money
By tkrazy
The biggest lesson in this book is make up a gimmicky ebook and wait for a few suckers to waste their money. I wasn't expecting greatness, but I thought there would at least be two or three worthwhile ideas out of 101. There were not. Most of the ideas were either obvious (if you are already a doctor, you can also do that overseas!) or ridiculous (spend a ton of time & money and become a sky dive instructor!). This book isn't just poorly written (lots of multiple exclamation points!!!!) and light on info, it genuinely feels like the author threw it together in an hour to scam people out of two bucks. Look elsewhere for legitimate info.

Inconsistent, States the Obvious, Uninformed Author
By Sukey
Unfortunately, the author generated a list that included many options that she hadn't done or researched. While I realize that no one can try out 101 jobs easily, the author could have talked with people who had done those she hadn't experienced in order to be able to provide a realistic account of them. The book is more a set of ideas, with little information on how one might actually pursue them or learn more and often without even enough information to understand fully the recommendation. I was disappointed.

Interesting List of (Mostly) Doable Jobs
By Fibonacci
As someone who is already doing one of the things suggested here, teaching English in Southeast Asia, I can attest to the fact that many of these jobs are quite doable. Some, like gigolo, may be a bit far-fetched, not to mention distasteful, to someone of a certain age, but the rest of this list is within reach for most of us. This is not a long or particularly deep book, but if you are looking for ways to see the world, it's a good place to start.

From Publishers Weekly
Warning in his introduction that this anthology contains "some of my most obscure work," Wolfe ( Castleview ) goes on to briefly describe the background of the 34 "storeys," which include some intriguing ideas. Unfortunately, the ideas are generally more provocative and interesting than the stories themselves. In "Straw," for example, Wolfe postulates the invention of the hot-air balloon in 500 A.D.; the story, however, about five balloon soldiers carrying pincer maces and searching for food and straw, goes nowhere. Not entirely disappointing, the collection includes such highlights as "In Looking-Glass Castle," "The Recording" and "The Marvelous Brass Chessplaying Automation." Best is "From the Desk of Gilmer C. Merton," a hilarious series of letters between an up-and-coming SF/horror writer and his agent. The bulk of the works remain either frustratingly short ("To the Dark Tower Came," "Continuing Westward"), far too long ("Trip, Trap," "The Rubber Bend") or simply pointless ("The Flag," "Redbeard").

From Library Journal
This collection of 31 stories, first published in a limited British edition, assembles previously uncollected material by one of the genre's most intelligent and lucid writers. From a pair of stories featuring the detective March B. Street ("Slaves of Silver," "The Rubber Bend") to a locked-room mystery aboard an interplanetary spaceship ("Cherry Jubilee"), these tales display Wolfe's quirky, literate style. Although some stories are little more than mood pieces, others ("Trip, Trap," "The Marvelous Brass Chessplaying Automation") pierce the veil of the fantastic with an eerie, indefinable clarity. Libraries with a strong audience for speculative fiction will want to consider this.

From Kirkus Reviews
A fine collection--originally published in 1988 by a small British press in a limited edition, and winner of the World Fantasy Award for Best Collection of that year--showcases the wide range of Wolfe's weird and wonderful talent. Wolfe is a master of subtlety and misdirection, and his work often requires fairly close reading: these traits are put to good use in ``Slaves of Silver'' and ``The Rubber Bend,'' science- fictional Sherlock Holmes pastiches, and in ``Cherry Jubilee,'' a challenging drawing-room mystery set aboard a Mars-bound spaceship. The stories run the gamut from science fiction to fantasy to horror: ``Sightings at Twin Mounds'' tells of an investigation of UFO reports, with typical Wolfe wit; ``The Packerhaus Method'' describes future improvement in embalming techniques; in ``Straw,'' we get a glimpse of a world in which hot-air balloons were invented in the Dark Ages; and ``Trip/Trap'' offers two intertwined points of view describing first contact with a primitive alien culture. Many of the pieces defy all classification: ``From the Desk of Gilmer C. Merton'' offers a glimpse of author-agent correspondence, while ``Parkroads: A Review'' is told in the form of a film review. Wolfe describes the 34 tales here as ``mostly stories I feel are good, but that have received little or no praise.'' This edition should bring the many excellent pieces the wider attention and approbation they deserve. -- Copyright 1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Get Initiated into the Wolfepack
By Harcohen
This was perhaps the first Wolfe collection I'd read eons ago when it was still in hardcover. Storeys is a great introduction for those uninitiated into the Wolfepack. The man can literally write anything. He is one of the most talented, literary, and funny writers in any genre. But he bases his home in science fiction for a reason: no other genre allows as much flexibility. And boy does Wolfe flex his muscle in this collection. There is no typical Gene Wolfe story just as there is not typical Gene Wolfe novel, but one thing you can always count on is quality. He is a true craftsman. He never takes the easy way out, and always gives you more than you were expecting. He is a priceless, timeless talent. A true artist. Read the stories in Storeys and see why Gene Wolfe is the most highly praised author of speculative fiction in the world.

Look at what some publishers pass up!
By Michael A. LeJeune (mike_l@bellsouth.net)
I should try to load this review down with penetrating insights into Mr. Wolfe's methods and modus, and his (to me, lofty) place in the post-modern literary world, but I get toungue (finger?) -tied and flounder and it comes off sounding lame. Suffice it to say that this short story collection is interesting in that it is comprised almost entirely of stories that were never published or published only with great difficulty. Not all, or even most, of these stories are science fiction (but then, what of Mr. Wolfe's work has ever been exclusivly SF? And who cares?) These tales form a diverse collection ranging from a various ghost stories, wide ranging fantasy pieces, a light meditation about life as seen from a train, and, as always (Mr. Wolfe's forte'), some very incisive comments on humans and why they do the weird things they do.
My own favorites are "The Sightings at the Twin Mounds," "The Death of the Island Doctor," "Redwood Coast Roamer," "A Solar Labyrinth," and "Redbeard."
If you've never read Wolfe, this is a good place to start. If you have read Wolfe and you don't have this book, then what the heck are you waiting for?

Amazing
By Caterwaul
The very title is a gentle pun: "storeys" rather than "stories", and it opens the door to another of Gene Wolfe's just slightly cockeyed universes. I usually read Wolfe's books with an unabridged dictionary nearby, and I am never annoyed at interrupting my reading in order to refer to it. As with all his books, reading him is a slow process, and yet that only makes me feel that I am getting more for my money.
His characters are real. While they are all characters in the other sense of the word, none seems unbelievable.
Read this book. And read "Free Live Free."
