I wasted my money

This was not the same classroom textbook that I used in college. I was very dissappointed! I was really looking forward to receiving it but when I got this, I did not even want to read it! I haven't read it and Iprobably won't. I wasted my money. The print is too small, and the format is difficult to follow. It did come when the seller said it would. I wish I had not ordered it though. It was cheap and I got what I paid for, NOT MUCH. It was some special edition that was for TV interactive program for use for adoption purposes only, not what I thought it advertized to be. I will not buy from this seller again. Sorry

Great Introductory Textbook!

This textbook has tons of good information in it and does not seem to be biased. It has a few gaps, but it is an introductory textbook, so that is not a problem. I rented this for my Human Growth and Development class and I kind of wish I had actually purchased this one! We use the book every single week and it is a valuable resource. It is also very pleasant to read and flows nicely - that's very important to me when it comes to textbooks. I have learned a lot from it already and I was already fairly familiar with the subject! Highly recommend!

Everyone has opinions about what government "should do" and many people spend a lot of their lives trying to make a difference. And yet change is frustratingly slow and sometimes misdirected. How do things change at the federal government level?

Elaine Kamarck provides a fantastic resource and tool for anyone who wants to understand this and even more so for anyone who want to try to catalyze change. From her unique blend of academic and intellectual cred (PhD from Berkeley, professor at Harvard's Kennedy School and now head of a Center at Brookings Institution) and street cred (Al Gore's policy advisor, central role leading the Clinton-Gore Reinventing Government initiative, co-founding intellectual of the New Democrat movement and political player for over thirty years), she provides plenty of cogent theory and plenty of compelling anecdotal examples to make it real,

While many academics know the literature and theory, they rarely have any realistic sense of what happens behind the closed doors of the White House and Congress. And while memoirs of leading political figures tell lots of stories, they rarely provide any sound framework to help connect the patterns and suggest the ways one can succeed. Kamarck brings that very rare combination of both perspectives and she is concise enough to get it done in less than 150 pages!

Students of government and political science will find both the summary of theory and the killer examples they want and advocates and practitioners will find useful guidelines to prompt their thinking about how they might best proceed.

Lorrie Kruse has always been drawn to books. She remembers the excitement when the Scholastic book pamphlets were handed out way back in grade school. She immediately started circling all of the books she wanted. Little did she know that one day she would write her own book. Being a creative person, it s only natural that her creativity would creep out in the form of writing. Lorrie s reading interests have shifted over the years. Once she hit the teen years and moved past kids stories, she moved on to horror stories. (Three cheers to Stephen King s wife for pulling his manuscript out of the garbage.) A Very Touching Story

This story starts out with Matthew Huntz waking up in the hospital after he has been involved in an accident. Nothing anyone says to him can prepare him for the shock of waking up paralyzed. At first, he doesn't believe it. Then he refuses to accept that he is paralyzed. Then he believes it will just be a matter of time before he is all better. But things aren't moving quickly enough for him, his family, or his fianc�e. They all want him to walk again now or at least in the very near future.

Abby is a physical therapist who is assigned to help Matt. She has to work with him and teach him how to maneuver in and out of his chair as well as learn how to balance and move without tipping over. She is also trying to help him accept that he may never walk again. Matt refuses all help in that last category, but that doesn't stop Abby from giving him a reality check every once in a while.

There were many things I liked about this book. For a debut novel, I was really impressed with Lorrie Kruse's style. The banter between the characters in this book is sarcastic and fun. Matt's family is supportive but at the same time not willing to grasp the reality of Matt's situation. Matt's girlfriend seems like she is trying to accept this new situation with Matt but there is just something about her that tells you it is probably not going to ever be the same.

I think what I liked most about this book was that it was realistic fiction. When things go bad in our lives we all look for that miracle that will make everything all better. As an author, you can just write a miracle into the story when you need one instead of working out the story without a miracle. Lorrie Kruse chose to work out the story instead of writing in a miracle and I liked that. Also, there were many things about living as a handicapped person that were described correctly. Lorrie didn't just skip over all the difficult stuff a handicapped person must live with. When you are paralyzed, it is not just about getting into a wheel chair and rolling yourself around. Everything becomes a challenge. I think Lorrie did a great job explaining some of those challenges that a newly handicapped person would have to face.

"Poignant, highly emotional. Lorrie Kruse is an author to watch."

Matthew Huntz thought his life was working out as planned. He is working with his father at their construction company, he has found the girl he will marry and built the house to raise his family in; everything is perfect to make his dad proud of him. Perfect, until Matt wakes in the hospital after a devastating accident; an accident he can't remember. When the doctors tell Matt and his family that he is paralyzed from the waist down, his life and all of his plans fall apart.
Abby Fischner, the physical therapist assigned to his case, is happy to finally be working with a spine injury patient. Matt is stubborn, angry and in denial about his situation. Abby is no shy maiden, either, she does her best to come out the victor in their battle of wills. Abby has problems and issues of her own, but working with Matt and trying to get him see that he is not defined by his handicap, helps to ease her burdens. Also, more importantly, she has made a dear friend. Now if only she could keep herself from falling in love with him.
A Life Worth Living is an emotional journey with many highs and lows along the way. There are joys and sorrows in this novel, and the foibles of friends and family, warts and all. I caught myself many times, wanting to tell Matt to grow up, and yet I cheered him on through his recovery. Likewise, I watched as the relationship developed in increments as the days and months passed. Have the tissues ready when you read this book, it will hit your heart in many places. Bravo, Ms Kruse!

I had high hopes for this book, but I found it a slow, frustrating read. I really liked how realistic the portrayal of spinal cord injury was. Kudos to the author for really doing her research, putting in a lot of details, and not cheating on the outcome.

However, the pacing is way off. The novel begins with Matt waking up in the hospital, at that point with a girlfriend who is clearly 100% wrong for him. However, it takes until nearly the end of the novel for this obviously doomed relationship to end, which leaves us almost no time to get to know Abby or see Matt and Abby together.

In the meantime, we are treated to pages and pages of Matt's serious depression, agonizing over this doomed relationship, and bad advice from his parents. This is also quite realistic, but more fitting for literary fiction than romance. I found Matt really whiny, immature, and unpleasant. Bad enough that he can't get over his glory days in high school and that he is obsessed with being just like his dad. His incipient alcoholism was the final straw--I just could not buy him as a romantic hero.

About the Author
Marko Kloos is a novelist, freelance writer, and unpaid manservant to two small children. He is a graduate of the Viable Paradise SF/F Writers' Workshop. Marko writes primarily science fiction and fantasy because he is a huge nerd and has been getting his genre fix at the library ever since he was old enough for his first library card. In the past, he has been a soldier, a bookseller, a freight dock worker, a tech support drone, and a corporate IT administrator. Echos of Heinlein and Huxley

This book is extremely readable and engaging. I finished it quickly and felt disappointed that it ended and I am hoping for this to grow into a series. The book is a classic "Hero's Journey" storyline, and I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed "Starship Troopers" and noted a lot of the differences. Instead of Heinlein's "Citizen/Civilian" political dynamic that led to an almost "utopia" found in the classic "Starship Troopers" we find the results of generational welfare taken to the logical conclusion as the base setting for "Terms of Enlistment." The grit, dirt, and ugliness of the socialist dole life remind me of Huxley's "Brave New World" in dealing with the underclass. But the book is not about economics or politics, those settings are only there to explain the rational of characters which the setting does admirably.

The mercenary attitude of the protagonist is refreshing, not gritty or jaded but honestly working hard to scramble up out of poverty. The action sequences are well written and manage to convey crappy orders that grunts execute because that is just how the system works.

Out the "self-publish" league

Fine SF novel. Money well spent. Good entertainment, engrossing and real. Better than second-tier work from folks like Silverberg or whoever. Solid, visual, no-fat writing. Great technical skill at describing action, and he makes the most of his strengths. Strictly mature professional, no self-indulgence or slack, no major false moves, quite a trick for a guy with no editor. I didn't notice the prose at all, which is the highest praise there is for guys whose names don't end in Vance or Plunkett. Three or four minor "continuity errors", but nothing story-critical. I was uncomfortable with how comfortable the characters were inflicting casualties on massively outgunned opponents, but combat is ugly stuff by nature and that's a matter of taste. And they get chewed up real good soon enough (loose end there, though). It's a bit episodic, like any military fiction -- the characters have to go where they're told, though a clever enough plotter could make that work to his advantage, I'm sure. High concept: SPACE MARINES SEINFELD!!!!!

It doesn't rise to the first rank: It doesn't rattle your head -- though chapter thirteen starts off pretty intense. Characterization isn't deep. Not a whole lot of detailed interior life or conflict, or anyway not much that stuck in my head. More than the Lensman novels, though! But none of Smith's vast lunatic sweep and grandeur, either. Tight, focused, practical, concrete. With that kind of thing, I'd like a little (I said little) more interior agony b.s. in the mix, or some weirder stuff that'd grab you by the nuts more, but if the author just gives us more of the same next time out, I'll happily buy that and gobble it up. He is who he is. Maybe blow up some bigger stuff. The author is very good at describing stuff blowing up and bad things happening without sounding amateurish or perfunctory. I'd like to see him wreck the s#� t out of some Iain-Banks-scale toys.

So that's the deal. Good old fashioned gripping readable military adventure SF, without any Dicksonian mystical twaddle. I'll re-up (HURR HURRR HURRRRR) for the sequel.

It's horrifying this doesn't have a publisher. It's a quality professional SF novel, better than 95% (UPDATE: 99%) of the field these days.

Two different stories and I only liked one of them

I started reading this novel and was amazed at how good it was. The storytelling was taut and realistic and I very much enjoyed it. I was drawn in by the main character and I was looking forward to what looked like it would be a Starship Troopers-style character evolution.
Then he kills a bunch of civilians in collateral damage (justifiably, I am not criticizing his actions, he had no choice) and suddenly he's in the space Navy with his girlfriend and then all character evolution stops dead in its tracks.
At that point, instead of an interesting and engrossing book that examines terrestrial politics, we get an incredibly UNrealistic alien invasion novel with no character advancement and cardboard cutouts as characters. I don't know why the author chose this path but it was very disappointing. If he had done this whole book with the POV character in the TA fighting on Earth, trying to trace down where the rioters in Detroit got military weapons, that would have been an awesome novel, particularly for a first timer. Instead, we got half an awesome novel and half a cheesy alien story.
Too bad. I would have given five stars to that OTHER novel...
