About the Author
The author s McAfee Professor of Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a member of the prestigious United States National Academy of Engineering. many examples are very helpful for readers like me. However

I've read the textbook dealing with DP up to chapter 6. Since this book is approached mathematically, I think it is very well made except a few typos. A bit of unsatisfactoriness for me is the style of the book. I prefer the style introducing the general result first, and then proves why they are derived and where they are derived from. And then, many examples are very helpful for readers like me. However, this book introduces examples first, and then constructs the general form from and using the examples. I am sure that everybody has different styles. My word is just not my type. Nevertheless, the contents that textbook handles are wonderful.

An essential & compelling piece Holocaust literature

An essential & compelling piece Holocaust literature, but not much value for JD/NO fanatics.
This book is hard to find, and is also a hard read. If you have come this far then your search is just beginning. Most booksellers list it as delated or out-of-print. I found a copy at my local library, of all places. But if you persevere, then you will be rewarded with a book that tells you everything you every wanted to know (and probably didn't) about life in a German concentration camp. It recounts the true story of a fourteen year-old Polish Jew schoolgirl who eventually arrived at the infamous "Joy Divsion", which was part of a camp that housed prositutes for the pleasure of German officers.
It ranks alongside "A Clockwork Orange" as one of the two most graphic and haunting books I've ever read. I think some of the imagery will remain with me a long time. There are also many allusions to Orwell's world of "1984", and there are recurrent (and sadly true) references to the Germans' twisted terminology. Even the concept of a barrack of prositutes being a "Joy Division" seems a perfect example of Orwell's "doublespeak".
I had hoped to ascertain a bit more knowledge about Joy Division's influences, but apart from the title, there is little relevance. So by that criteria, there was not much gained by reading the book, but the book became compelling in its own right, and I am glad to have read it, and might read more of his work and the genre. But note, that if your crazy about the band, and don't have the broader interest or think you could stomach this sort of thing, then there might not be much point in reading it in the first place.
Ka-Tzetnik's books are novels, in that they draw on the author's experiences and those of other inmates, but do not necessarily depict actual events and actual people. However, regardless of the context, House of Dolls is not for the faint-hearted; it makes Anne Frank's confinement seem like a Sunday School picnic.
The first link (listed below) is the best if you want info on Ka-Tzetnik & the House of Dolls. It's written as apart of an academic essay, but still quite informative and readable. My major query concerned how the author fitted into the picture, so to speak. The essay explains that it is his sister whom is the central character in the book, which is based on her diary. His character in the book is known as "Harry". The book also mentions his younger brother, Moni. Ka-Tzetnik has also written, seperately, about Moni's miserable and tortured life at Auschwitz. Ka-Tzetnik covers his own story in his book "Atrocity", apparently.

Slow start, but half-decent.

Ka-Tzetnik 135633, House of Dolls (Simon and Schuster, 1955)
Ka-Tzetnik 135633, Nazi-assigned pen name of an Auschwitz survivor (oddly, there seems to be some controversy as to who Ka-Tzetnik 135633 was; some say it was Yehiel De-Nir, others Karol Cetynski), here gives an account of life in a Nazi prison camp, but in the most roundabout of ways. This seemingly autobiographical novel (viz. Shvitti: A Vision, where he speaks of his own sister in Daniella's role) deals mostly with the stories of Harry and Daniella, a brother and sister living in the Jewish quarters of an unnamed town on the border of Germany and Poland. Roughly the first half of the book is a simple depiction of trying to get along day to day in the Jewish quarters, told mostly from Daniella's viewpoint. To be blunt, it's slow as molasses. The book picks up (and becomes the highly-recommended-by-the-underground book it is) when Daniella, not long after Harry, is taken to a concentration camp and ends up working in the House of Dolls, a camp brothel. Harry, in the next camp over, has been made the camp medic for no reason anyone can discern. There is little plot to the latter half of the novel; instead, Ka-Tzetnik 135633 infuses the whole mess with a painful sense of irony. Imagine an O.Henry story that runs 250 pages and has a far, far darker cast to it than anything O.Henry ever wrote.
There is much to be gained from reading this book beyond the prurient; don't get me wrong. However, I'm guessing that its audience is going to be an exceptionally narrow one; those who both revel in (or are horrified by, but cannot turn their eyes from) degradation (Daniella, I should mention, is fourteen when the novel takes place; this is the dark and ugly flip side of Duras' wonderful novel The Lover) and are willing to put up with the diction that one had thought went extinct with the death of Henry James. Still, it is the literary equivalent of, say, Shoah, the excellent and painful nine and a half hour film that still stands as the be-all and end-all of concentration camp documentaries. It is brutal and unflinching, for all its slowness, and deserves a wider audience than that which it has already captured. ** �

House of Dolls Review

Probably one of the most painful Holocaust books I've read. Even now years after reading this, my heart thuds remembering. House of Dolls describes a Nazi prostitution camp; where young Jewish women were forced into sexual slavery. The girls and women who weren't chosen as prostitutes were brutalized through arduous, back-breaking physical labor.

I wish no one would have to read a book like this -- but because hate and intolerance still exist no matter what history teaches -- perhaps reading House of Dolls will shock and appall us to stop degrading and destroying each other, and reach higher as human beings.

Black, chair of the department of neurosurgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, reflects on his extraordinary life and career. As an African-American growing up in Alabama and Ohio, Black benefited from the emphasis his scholarly parents put on learning: I was brought up to believe there was nothing that I could not do, and he published his first scientific paper at age 17 and went on to pioneer blood-brain barrier research to enable chemotherapy drugs to reach brain tumors directly. Introducing the reader to his colleagues and patients, Black tours the interior of the brain with detailed accounts of delicate surgical procedures: Under the microscope I could see the delicate latticework of blood vessels covering the brainstem, all of which absolutely had to be preserved. Documenting the risks and rewards of the procedures he performs, he also examines racial hurdles he had to leap to become a neurosurgeon. I really enjoyed this book

I really enjoyed this book. It was an intelligent and insight description of what it takes to be not only an excellent brain surgeon but one that had faith in his skills and the strength that is needed to be one of his patients. He not only relied on his skills to perform these difficult surgeries, but wouldn't unless you both were on the same page that you will have a good outcome from the surgery. It was more of a partnership. He never lied about the risk and the patients always new that he would do the best to get the best results for you. Wonderful to be such a gifted surgeon.

Being a patient of his probably makes me an unfair favorable bias towards this great doctor. I read the book in one sitting. I could'nt put it down! It reads like a great movie. Not hard for non medical types like myself. A very interesting life story and everyday life of a top neurosurgeon is revealed here. I highly reccommend it! You wont be dissapionted

Was on site for Western Civilizations: Volume 1 and noticed they had an eBook for rental. Rented it only to realize later that the eBook rental was for Volume 2. Rented this textbook for my Ancient and Medieval World History class. To my surprise, it delivered brand new and still in plastic wrap. The paperback cover has a nice texture to it, but still not durable enough for any college textbook. I tried very hard not to abuse the cover or binding, but it's so easy to ruin the corners when sliding it into a book bag. The content in the book wasn't horribly written, but the chapters were a lot longer than necessary for my specific class. I tried keeping up with the assigned readings but the class was way too fast paced to read everything, (the tests were based on her notes anyway). If you love history I'm sure it will be easier for you to get through the chapters than me.

Excellent book on exterior envelope materials and principles

I guess this is another Birkhauser "manual" series that are
indispensable for architects who's interests lie in
exterior detailing.

20% of the book pays attention to the dry stuff
(basic physics, structural issues, thermal & moisture
performances, etc) of exterior principles .

60%, obviously main body of book, introduces
different types of envelope systems based on materials.
Starting from stone, it covers clay, concrete, timber, metal,
glass, and plastics.

Last 20% of the book covers special facade systems that are
more relevant to recent sustainable consciousness.
Double-glass and solar manipulators are covered in addition to
solar energy concepts.

Contents of each section are typically covered in the order of
historical overview, material properties, and case studies.
If the prospect reader owns any of the "Construction Manual"
series by Birkhauser, then there is definitely many overlaps.
(Both in writings and case images provided)

One plus point is that the book can serve diverse audience group.
Depending on the years of experience in the profession,
projects provided are inspirational enough for students at school,
and at the same time, informative enough for project architects in
the office.

The real juicy part of the book is that the case studies provided are
very recent and experimental, hence eye-riveting. The detail drawings
are just enough to, not overburden us, but make us engaging. And there
are plenty of in-depth discussion on recent finds on preventive treatment
of each materials.

One caution. If the prospect reader is not good at reading dry
physics-like book (as is often the case with architects...),
I highly recommend skipping first 20% of the book for later read.

Great For Architecture Students

I ordered the Facade Manual to help supplement my Architecture 431 class/Integrations. The book is broken down by materials which I found to be an asset when choosing materials during the design process. I would recommend this manual to anyone interested in how systems can be successfully integrated into the overall building design or anyone interested in learning how to properly detail key elements in section.

Valuable Piece but Expensive...

A valuable book enough to consider buying, however it is a little bit expensive....
Technical descriptions are valuable, very nice schematic drawings and example figures included.
Again, a little bit expensive book for its massive content (but not for technical content)...

Dudley Moore was one of the most beloved and respected artists of our time. Actor, comedian, pianist, composer, conductor, and vocalist, he was renowned for his work in all these areas. Best known to the public for his leading roles in smash hits such as Arthur, Foul Play, and Unfaithfully Yours, he was internationally loved by his audiences. Nevertheless, Dudley's first love was music. A highly-trained classical musician, he studied violin and organ at the Guildhall School of Music in London and later attended Magdalen College at Oxford University as an organ scholar, also studying composition. In his teens, he was inspired by jazz pianists Erroll Garner and Oscar Peterson, and went on to spend many years recording and performing internationally with his own jazz trio. A highly personal collection, Songs Without Words also includes his tribute to composers Tchaikovsky (Thank you, Ilyich) and Satie; a piece dedicated to his son Patrick; and others reflecting his own whimsical play on language. The thirteen pieces share a melancholy and pensive feeling typical of Moore's compositional style. These are, however, challenging pieces, suitable for the advanced pianist. Steve Law's transcriptions were taken from Dudley Moore's recordings. A British composer and arranger, Law studied music at Bristol University and received a Master's degree for his jazz opera Heaven on Earth. In 1998, Law dedicated a piano transcription of Moore's music from the film Bedazzled, and sent the unsolicited score to him, who was so impressed that he invited the young composer to meet with him in London. Law's transcriptions retain the integrity of Moore's rich melodic line, lush expressive harmony and jazz-like improvisation.

The pieces are quite sad in their tone which is quite typical of Moore's compositional style. I am a complete devoted fan of Mr. Moore's works, This is more than a gift to myself.

The book is made of great quality paper and it's just one of the best additions to my library.

Perhaps you too can play Dudley's wonderful music? A lot depends on your level of musicianship, though!

The author has meticulously and accurately captured just what Dudley played in the celebrated recording. The presentation format is good. Some of the turnovers are a bugaboo but isn't all music like that these days. This material is excellent but you need to know your stuff as it is not for the faint-hearted.
