Don't get this book! This book says some girls are beautiful and some are not.

This review comes from my daughter who is 8 years old and who is dictating her review to me: "Warning: do not get this book. It does not give girls good ideas. It says 'how to stay on track and be true to yourself...blah blah blah..'. but then they have some really stupid ideas in there like 'if you're really popular, you need to have a boyfriend who is really popular'. Not true at all! And in my opinion, all girls are beautiful in their own way. And it says 'some girls are beautiful and some aren't'. So don't get this book."

Excellent beginners book for curious girls

This book, along with all of the other American Girl self help books, is an excellent tool for parents of pre-teen and young teen girls. My daughter is only nine (soon to be 10 in a few months) and she is already well into puberty. (How is this even possible!) She started getting curious about boys this year, and much to my dismay, I have even found scribblings in her room that say "I love ____ so much!" I immediately took it upon myself to go searching for help on how to have a discussion with my daughter since I have no clue, and my parents never had a discussion with me, so I am starting from scratch here. I pre-read the book, and found the first half of it to be perfect for us. It explains what her feelings are and why she is going through what she is experiencing and gives some tips for dealing with boys.
That being said, personally I feel that the second half of the book is a little mature for her now at this age. It deals more with going steady, girls fighting over boys, and dating which is NOT happening any time soon in this household. So, what I did was get one of those black binder clips and told her that she can only read the part that is not in the binder clip by herself. If she wants to read further, she can, but we have to do it together. She does not read the book in private so we can keep tabs on it. However, if a younger girl were to read the second half, I don't feel it is racy or anything like that, so it wouldn't be the end of the world or anything. I just would like to be there to help explain that this is what she will be experiencing as an older girl, and it is not time for her to be going steady at this point.
Overall, a very excellent tool to use and when the dog destoyed our first copy, I didn't hesitate to order it again to keep around as a reference she can go back to again and again.

A must have for girls just before middle school

I have a 10yo daughter. I found this book to be empowering and straight forward. It dealt with issues I did not know how to articulate to her in an age appropriate manner. I found it to be just informative enough but not too much. It celebrated girl hood but acknowledged and assisted with the awkward period of learning how to relate to boys. I loved the advise like "don't have a girlfriend talk to the boy for you" and stuff like that. And, it did not promote inappropriate behavior but simply dealt with those emerging feelings and adjustments that occur.
