About the Author

edge of Eternity read like an eternity

Edge of eternity read like an eternity. Ken Follett has been one of my favorite authors, and I never thought I would have anything bad to say about his stories. With all of the thrilling events occurring during the years of his final installment of the trilology, he chose to glorify liberal achievements of the age in a very political manner. So disappointed in this final episode!

Disappointing

I loved the first two books of the century trilogy (and several other Follett books). Fall of Giants was a 5 star read. Winter of the World was easily 4 stars. But Edge of Eternity was very disappointing. First, it becomes simply too much of a stretch to interweave the families from the first two books into virtually every important event of the past 50 years. But more annoying was the author letting his strong left wing politics color the entire book. All of the liberal, "progressive" characters were heroes, good looking, brilliant and saw the world "as it really is", while the conservative characters were portrayed as either ignorant warmongers, or evil (or both). The character that mirrored Jane Fonda was of course portrayed as a courageous hero for fraternizing with the N. Vietnamese during the war; and somehow, the Berlin Wall fell despite Regan's and George H. W. Bush's bumbling and misguided efforts. Really? Quite the revisionist version of history.

Great trilogy- but Edge falls short after the Kennedy assassination.

Overall, I greatly enjoyed the Century Trilogy. As always, Ken Follett has produced engaging and educational semi-fiction (fiction based on real events). However, "Edge of Eternity" was a somewhat disappointing conclusion to an otherwise stunning plot.
After completely drawing the reader in with "Fall of Giants," which covers the events of the 20th century through the completion of WWI, and maintaining the engagement and drama through "Winter of the World," which moves the characters (and now their descendants) through WWII, I wondered if Follett could bring the same excitement to the Cold War. As the "Edge of Eternity" opens, he manages to do just that- primarily by bouncing back and forth between the Cold War, the Civil Rights movement, and the events leading up to the construction of the Berlin Wall.
However, it seems once Kennedy is assassinated (I would hope that is not a "spoiler" for anyone :^), it seems as if "Edge" loses its edge... After giving us a thorough view of the good and bad of each political leader in the 20th century, Follett gives only a cursory treatment to presidents Nixon, Reagan, and Bush (basically, Nixon is simplified to being a "bullying crook," Reagan as a patron of homicide, and Bush as a blunderer). According to Follett, Mikhail Gorbachev single-handedly overcame the conservatives in the USSR and the blundering of America as a world power. Having personally lived through this period of the 20th century, I found the treatment of the 80-90s to be a bit "weak" compared to the exquisite craftsmanship Follett was able to achieve with the previous decades.
Do not misunderstand- I am fully comfortable with an author allowing his/her own world view to tint the lens through which s/he portrays history. However, it just seems as if Follett got "lazy" with the 80-90s. I was especially disappointed with the anti-climatic ending... Really, after reading through thousands of pages you leave me with the inauguration of President Barack Obama (which didn't even occur in the 20th century) as the summation of the entire tale?
Overall, this entire series (including "Edge of Eternity") is still epic in nature- and I would be happy to find it on the required reading list of students everywhere. Still, its sad to think the final few hundred pages of this trilogy did not live up to the workmanship of the rest. If I want biased political fiction, I can read Tom Clancy... I've come to expect more from Ken Follett.
