Dr. George Jacob was born in Quilon, now, Kollam, in Kerala, India on October 6th, 1965. He is the oldest of four children born to his parents, the late Mr. E.V. Jacob, a seafood exporter and Mrs. Elizabeth Jacob, who was a lecturer in Zoology at St. Teresa’s College, Cochin, at that time. He passed MBBS from Medical College, Kottayam, Kerala, India in 1990, and later M.S (General Surgery) from the same college in 1996. He then started his career as a surgeon in a busy Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, which functioned in three major hospitals in the private sector in Cochin. Ten years later, at 39, just as he was beginning to realize his passion as a surgeon, he su� ered a massive stroke that paralyzed the left side, wreaking his surgical career in the process. This ‘bolt from the blue’, necessitated change of vocation from that of a surgeon to that of an Intensivist in the Surgical ICU, where he works as Senior Specialist. Having lost the sense of direction in life, at least momentarily, he took to writing. He found a new avenue to express himself, through the unfamiliar world of letters, exchanging his scalpel for the pen, in the process. His new-found passion had him contribute in various sections of the national daily, The New Indian Express.

A wonderful surprise

It must sound depressing to read a book about a handsome young man who, just as his brilliant career as a surgeon is beginning to soar, suffers a massive stroke, ending his life as a surgeon forever. No question Dr. George Jacob did struggle trying to figure out just who he was supposed to be for the rest of his life, but this book will surprise you. It is full of good humor, the fun and games of children, and a delightful glimpse into his upbringing and life in far southwest India, plus the amazing support he has had from his family, friends and professional colleagues. You see him and his siblings singing along with Nashville’s “Gentleman Jim” Reeves on recordings his father brought home to Kerala from the United States. It is also a very honest story of how different the world of medicine can look from his experience climbing out of the hole the stroke put him in.
Dr. Jacob is new to writing, so don’t expect a smooth, poetic read, although I did not find any of his quirks with the English language to be particularly distracting. It is a wonderful story of the ups and downs of true healing, straight from the heart.

The first Sino-U.S. treaty in 1844 authorized the extraterritorial application of American law in a putatively lawless China. A kind of legal imperialism, this practice long predated U.S. territorial colonialism after the Spanish-American War in 1898, and found its fullest expression in an American district court’s jurisdiction over the “District of China.” With urgent contemporary implications, legal Orientalism lives on in the enduring damage wrought on the U.S. Constitution by late nineteenth-century anti-Chinese immigration laws, and in the self-Orientalizing reforms of Chinese law today. In the global politics of trade and human rights, legal Orientalism continues to shape modern subjectivities, institutions, and geopolitics in powerful and unacknowledged ways.

To start off my review, I just want to say that I enjoyed reading this book sent to me by the author. I do not usually read paranormal/romance books, but this one blew me away in a sweep. I've been fascinated with books that centralize on angels, or in this situation--angels of Death.

This translated novel revolves around a normal teenager named Gemma who suddenly encountered a mysterious presence wherein apparently, she's the only who experienced this. Ever since this happened, she's been delusional and lost in her own thoughts. After this Angel of Death, Evan, interfered a lot of times with Gemma, she felt connected with him, and is slowly falling in love with him.

I definitely enjoyed reading this book. I'm even surprised that even the book being translated, it was still as amazing as it should be. This book is divided into a dual point-of-view, being Gemma's and Evan's, which gave a huge advantage to the book. It was fun reading from a human and an angel's perspective.

The thing is, the attachment between the character and myself as a reader was intact. I love how the characters were written; it felt like they were the fictional characters who I really want to be with and hang out with. Actually, all the characters felt like my fictional group of friends, and it was fun hanging out with them while reading this.

Not to mention how beautifully this book was written. The translator did a great job here, definitely commendable. The characters, the story and the dialogue were greatly crafted with an interesting concept that is enough to pull me into their world where angels of death exist to take away lives, and it felt like they took my life for me to live there.

I really recommend this book, and you should try to start reading this book. It may not be as famous as you think, but it's a book definitely worth checking out. If you're interested with a world filled with angels and witches, this one's surely for you.

Words can't even begin to tell you how much I loved this book. I will say at first I thought it was going to be very long winded. Omg was I wrong!! This story will take you everywhere in just minutes.

I loved this book. I was totally hooked and I could not stop reading. It was a real page-turner. I just hope that Mrs Amore will publish the second part very very soon. Oh my... I can't wait to keep on reading Elisa's books!

I had purchased the 1st edition of this book when it originally came out and just recently recieved the 2nd edition as a gift. I was extremely impressed with the 1st edition and this new edition makes a fantastic book current with the latest codes and methods. Additionally, the book adds some new discussions about recent trends in the industry such as BIM. While there are many steel member design manuals, there is essentially no other book that complies the current practice of steel connection design in one manual like this book. With chapters written by industry experts, the current practice of steel member connection design is discussed with relevant details, fabricated steel pictures, and worked examples. In some cases, such as Chapter 10 - Connections to Composite Members, I have found this information no where else but this book. If you are looking for a manual for steel connection design, this is it.

This is a very poorly written book. Not only can one not follow the text, but the illustrations are poor as well. It is not comphrensive in its treatment of steel connection design or even concept. I'd avoid this book. In fact, I've learned that almost every book that claims to a handbook is anything but. There is a better treatment of steel connections in Jack MCormac's Steel Design. This book is a dud.
