About the Author
David Nelson, born in 1938, was educated at Calday Grange Grammar School, Cheshire, and won an open mathematical scholarship to Christ's College, Cambridge. After postgraduate work in mathematical logic at Cambridge and Bristol universities, he entered the teaching profession. He has published papers in mathematical journals and is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.

Since 1981 he has been a Lecturer in Education at the University of Manchester specializing in mathematics education and the history of mathematics. His recent publications include Extension of Calculus and Multicultural Mathematics. He has lectured in Poland, Italy and France, and in 1995, at the invitation of the State Education Committee of the People's Republic of China, organised and led a three week National Seminar on Mathematics Education to initiate reform of the Chinese national mathematics curriculum.

His main recreations are playing the flute and piano, gardening and squash. His wife, Gillian is a writer and they have three small children.

Handy reference

This book is useful for anyone doing maths at college. It summarizes just about everything and is good as a quick reference to refresh your memory on something. (It is also fun just to page through, and look at all the wierd things that mathematicians have come up with). Another advantage is that if you are studying a section in maths that you are finding a little confusing or hard to grasp, the entry in this dictionary will give the important points. But don't expect too much detail, which I think is the main drawback of the book.

Really, really helpful!

Anybody who regularly does math on a more-or-less advanced level will delight in this book; it is exhaustive but managable (the size of a common pocket novel, really) and quite concise. Buyers should realize, of course, that books like these are not meant to learn you calculus or whatever; instead, it is more of a helpful hand when you need it. Now, what was that formula for partial integration, again...?

Easy to read Text with good insight for Teams and Groups

This text is not one that you have to force yourself to push through to read. It flows well and is easy and interesting to read through. It does have some excellent insights into group and team communication, collaboration and interaction with each other and outside forces. I thought it was a very well done text and appropriate (current) for the large amount of group and team interaction in the workplace today.

A MUST HAVE SOURCE

This is the foundation work for all economic history on WW II. If you haven't reads this, then you will not completely understand the subject matter of wartime economics between 1939 and 1945. This is not to say that Milward is un-reproachable, just that this book was the beginning of sensible analysis and has stood the test of time very well indeed. It is a must have for any historian of the period.

This excellent book is fundamental to understanding both the nature of the Second World War and its consequences. Published over 25 years ago, it is still the basic book on this topic and a goldmine of information about WWII. In a series of concise and well written chapters, Milward covers a series of crucial topics including the basic strategic/economic approaches of the major (and some minor) combatants, the economic consequences of the war, the ways in which the combatants adapted to the prolonged nature of the war, the effects of the war on agriculture and labor, the organization of food supplies, the economics of occupation, attempts at economic warfare, and the efforts to establish a post-war economic order. A large number of interesting observations emerge. For example, at the outset of the war, each combatant's economic policy is shown to be the product of the overall strategic concept of the war (or in the case of the USA and the Soviet Union, lack of a strategic concept of the war). The British envisioned a longterm war, chose to organize a total war economy, and invested in research and development that would be very fruitful despite limited industrial capacity. For the Germans, on the other hand, Blitzkrieg was more than a tactic. It implies a war economy based on short, successful wars and deferring total mobilization for war. The Japanese hoped to make the war pay with economic support from the newly established conquests in Southeast Asia and China. As the war progessed, all the major combatants had to mobilize for total war, to greater and lesser degrees of success. The Allied economies were the most successful, partly because of the enormous capability of the USA but also because the polticial structure of the democracies proved more capable of developing the administrative apparatus for total mobilization. Milward is very good on how the experience of warfare altered the economies of combatants and the international economy as a whole. Milward shows also how the experience of economic mobilization abetted the organization and powers of central governments in the democracies and fueled the expectations that a successful international economic order based on active government control could be developed. This came to be partially true. As is often the case in Western history, warfare has been the mechanism by which centralization and expanded government power has occurred. Implicit in Milward's discussions are that this is true for domestic politics. The success of central governments and central control of the economy in WWII surely had a great deal to do with the emergence of socialist governments in Britain and more activist Federal governments (of any party) after the war.

Good But Flawed Review of Medieval Warfare

This is the kind of book that really turns my crank... obscure barbarian tribes, weapon use and tactics, tales of lost dynasties, imperial decline and the advent of new tribes, races and their own eventual conquest and submission.

The book has all of that.. unfortunately it suffers from an incomplete development of almost all of its major theses. Its review of tactics is most notable and I was impressed with the detial of the political organisation, and military mobilisation that Santosousso uses, but was left wondering how he defined his major thematic chapters.

The book starts at the end of the latter Roman Empire and the clashes between Rome and the Goths, then those between the Goths and Longobards, Byzantines and other barbarian tribes. These in turn switch to those of the Franks, the ascendency of the Muslim tribes and then the advent of the Medieval Christian warriors and their eventual demise with the nascent advent of citizen armies. All of this is great, but the narrative is marred by

1) lack of continuity: whole chuncks of history are leaped and interesting tactics and peoples totally ignored. ie. mongols are totally left out which is odd considering that there is a whole chapter dedicated to those perrenial losers of history, the Magyars.

2) The author throws in the occassional bloody story, but really once he gets our blood up with anecdotal elegance he switches to military organisation descriptions. These are fine but one gets the feeling that we would rather be reading some tales of blood and glory.

3) The description of miliary tactics and organisation, though good, omits a fundemental question: how were some of the tribes able to conquer others, and why did others decline?

I did like the grand historical sweep of the book and it did hold my interest most of the time. I guess the real problem I had with this book is that I was just expecting much more than Santosousso offerred me... I felt slightly famished after reading it... like eating an appetiser and then being told it was really the main course...

detailed account of medieval military tactics

Santosuo has given us a wonderfully researched history of medieval warfare. The book covers from the Barbarian tribes of the 6th century to the Mongol and Turk empires of the 15th century. Most of the major military engagements are covered along with the notable leaders of the respective periods. I found the general discussions of the political and military situations very interesting. But I got bogged down in the details concerning the make up of various armies. This work is a highly detailed account of tactics, formations and arms and equipment. Anyone interested in the nuts and bolts of medieval warfare will enjoy this book.

Now 20, and still in love, Miranda's designs are thwarted by the indiscretions of Nigel's late wife—heartbroken, Nigel isn't willing to risk another shot at love, even if it means hurting his close friend Miranda. Quinn's pitch-perfect humor remains intact, but her latest relies too much on romance conventions, including Miranda's scholarly but benignly neglectful father; an even more overused device involves Turner's hot-and-cold feelings toward Miranda, which reduce the heroine to tears more than once. However, the two make a lovable couple, and Miranda in particular shines, as do Turner's two siblings in strong secondary roles. Though a bit stale, this well-written, often funny and occasionally tender romance has much to enjoy. (July)

Disappointing and the worst Quinn book I've read - not one star because funny moments somewhat redeemed it

I was so excited for this book as Julia Quinn is a favorite of mine; I normally love her work and I also (surprise, surprise) love to see the quiet/shy girl get the guy. Though there was witty dialog and moments that had me laughing out loud, I really have to say I was disappointed and bothered by many aspects of this book.

PRAISE:
(1) Funny moments that will make you laugh
(2) Connection between Turner and Miranda is interesting to watch in about the first half of the book
(3) I liked Olivia and Turner's mother

CRITICISM:
Key: *Semi-spoiler, **Spoiler
(1) Turner (hero) and Miranda (heroine) are not written / portrayed consistently; they seem to (often) do things that are just very out of character
(2) Depiction of Miranda's father was very flat and I know he's supposed to be the absent-minded-doesn't-really-pay-attention type of character, but these type of one-dimensional portrayals bother me
(3) Development of their relationship is very uneven and they have sex at a pretty reasonable point in the book page-wise (halfway or so), but their relationship had definitely not developed fast enough for that; only two other physical scenes before that, both kissing, and one of them doesn't count because it is before Turner is really attracted to Miranda and is done more in anger
* (4) Miranda was really spineless throughout the latter half of the novel. I think that Turner's horrible absence either needed to be kept and her reaction and anger upped or he needed to show up much, much sooner to deserve her easy acquiescence. (I mean she caves in to marrying him after 3 days when she doesn't supposedly want to? Have a backbone!)
** (5) Miranda is not even UPSET by the fact that she miscarries and regardless of the kind-of-explanation that her mother had many miscarriages also, I just found this VERY troubling - you'd think she would somehow be affected
** (6) I didn't like the progression of the book, one example being the fact that we basically skip over the first six months of Miranda's second pregnancy and are just given one of her diary entries as a substitute
** (7) I was annoyed with Miranda (if you couldn't tell, Miranda gets progressively more annoying as you read) when she finally gets her long-awaited declaration of love and she reacts negatively at first because she doesn't want him to have realized his love only because he almost lost her
(8) The ending was very, very corny and yes, I know, I'm reading a romance novel, but the whole journal-revealing moment and Turner's comments ("My God, Miranda," he breathed reverently. "You really love me, don't you?")

CONCLUSION:
Save your money, buy one of Julia Quinn's other books as she has many great masterpieces to offer that will be one of those reread and keep-forever historical romances. Some suggestions include: The Viscount Who Loved Me, An Offer From a Gentleman, and Romancing Mister Bridgerton - these three are amazing.

Deserves nothing more than 2.5 stars

I want to start by saying I have read EVERY single one of Julia Quinn's novels and I consider myself a tremendous fan. That said, I will not rate this book more than it deserves.

The Secret Diaries is a horribly contrived story with equally horrid writing.Permit me to quote this gem
"Miranda wasn't sure why that should be the case- an unplanned pregnancy was an unplanned pregnancy was an unplanned pregrancy" (pg 45)

WHAT the hell is THAT phrasing doing in a Regency novel? In many of Julia Quinns previous novels, she uses phrases like 'I'm kidding' that are hopelessly out of the period, but those mishaps are wonderfully ensconsed in a good book. This time I could not let it go!

Another problem with this book is that it is TOO much 'Regency Lite'. Miranda's absent father was too TOO convenient, especially after she became pregnant. The situations she and Turner got into made absolutely no logical sense. After the first couple of times he kisses/gropes her, he makes a point to avoid her since , as he puts it, girls have been RUINED for doing less. He then avoids her like a plague and breaks her heart . Makes sense. But then they meet at a house party a week later AND HAVE SEX! Huh? As I was reading the lead up to the scene, I was thinking that he couldn't possibly take her virginity and she couldn't possibly LET him. *Sigh*

Another aspect of the novel I could not fathom was the relationship between the protagonists. Unrequited love can be wonderful storyline if executed properly. This one wasn't.The prologue, in my opinon was the most awful way to start any romance novel. A 10 year old falling in love with a man, and loving him forever since. Gah! Her journal entries amplify the 'Gah!' factor even more. Throughout her growing years it seems she ends every journal entry with 'I dreamt of him.'Really Miranda? I mean, did you REALLY dream of him every single night ?!?

Miranda even attended his wedding and wished it was her. At this point, her love is more and more like a overblown crush. There was nothing in in their interactions that said 'Love' to me.

Ironically, after they marry they settle in a nice routine and they finally FINALLY have seem to gain some sense, Miranda decides that she is upset because he doesn't say 'I love you.' I'm sorry but the fact that the tension is built around SAYING the words, rather than whether he loves her or not was rather silly of the author. I felt I was reading a contemporary romance with where the crux of the romance is 'gasp' , saying I love you.

I'm sorry Julia, this was not a good book.

**8/12/2007. I just read 'The Masquerade' by Brenda Joyce, and if I could downgrade this book to 1 star I would.In BJ's book, the heroine falls in love with the hero at age 10, however the end product was more fulfilling IMO**

I wanted so much to love this book.......

.....but I didn't. And that is really too bad. It had most of the elements I want when I read a Regency and yet I still didn't love it.

For me, Miranda was just too young. Ms Quinn wrote herself into a corner by establishing the age as 10 years old when Miranda fell in love with Nigel. I'm sure it sounded quite fetching when thinking about it from a promotional standpoint for the book but then she was stuck. Miranda kept saying that she was not a child anymore (Was she 19 or was she 20? I could never figure it out.) and yet she seemed to always act out as a child, with the episode in the bookstore being a prime example. And she didn't even just go there once and act awful, she did it twice! Her rage didn't come across to me as righteous indignation. It seemed like she was just throwing a hissy fit. She and Turner even reverted to childish behavior many times with the "Did not", "Did so" childish type arguments. She constantly told Turner that it didn't matter if he loved her or not, yet she kept trying to make him say that he loved her and punished him in various ways when he didn't say it. From my standpoint, all examples of a girl, young emotionally as well as in age. Not a mature woman ready to truly love a man. Ms Quinn did not do Miranda any favors by having her live such a sheltered, countryfied life completely without any socially maturing experiences before this story takes place.

Turner was "tortured" for way too long and I didn't like him at all. I actually began to wonder why Miranda bothered with him. There was a huge lack of other male characters in this book. Turner needed someone to talk to so that he could verbalize his feelings and have some opportunity to see how awful he was acting. As it was, he only came across as totally self-absorbed and a man who made dreadful decisions when he was drinking too much. I knew early on I would not like him when he was such a pig about people using his given name (Nigel). I didn't think that little insight into his character served any purpose whatsoever unless Ms Quinn wanted us to see how disrespectful and selfish he was going to become.

When the scene at the hunting lodge began to unfold I just thought to myself: No, Ms Quinn, don't do this. Surely she won't do this. Good grief, she did this. It was an awful scene and totally out of character for both these people at this point in the story.

If you love all things written by Julia Quinn, go ahead and buy this book. Everyone else, think if over carefully before you spend your money on it. This is a great candidate for a library check-out or even a used book store. If I could get mine to you, you would be welcomed to it.
