Even if you aren't new to electricity, you will find Harris' writing style a bit too technical to keep your interest for very long. Would recommend that stick with the more interestingly written books and technical papers by Eydeland & Wolyniec.

Heavy Reading

I had to get this book for a class I am taking. It is heavy reading making it a total slog to work through. It really is geared toward someone with more exposure to electrical markets and how they work for it to deliver. Richo Cech is an internationally recognized expert on the cultivation, processing and usage of medicinal plants. Creatively viewing the Story from the perspectives of the original participants adds to our understanding. Dr. Gilbert Bilezikian stands in this line of creative people. The first story in the book, "Through Joseph's Eyes," was first used in the mid 1970's at Wheaton College chapel and set a new Christmas tradition at Wheaton. The ability of drama to communicate the truth and power of The Story was also used by Willow Creek Community Church, the church he helped found with his student, Bill Hybels. I had the privilege of listening to Dr. B read the "purported" letter from Quirinius in early December and found myself pondering anew the power of The Story to change even a hardened politician and a pagan empire. That's hope our world desperately needs to hear again and again.

Bruce Weber's BEAR POND is one of the best of the male-physique photography books. The black-and-white pix are excellent and sharply focused. Too bad it was not printed on slick paper. And too bad Weber didn't do any sequels, like BEAR POND II - I'm sure thousands of people like myself would have bought it! I bought my copy - first edition - for $50.00 - good investment! Weber should do more books - he must have hundreds of photos in his files.

John Dewey, perhaps the most prolific figure in American philosophy and pragmatism, is roundly considered deficient with respect to ethics. Pappas (Texas A&M) addresses this misconception by demonstrating that ethics is the organizing center of Dewey's entire philosophical approach. This is a challenging thesis to argue for both dedicated pragmatists and philosophers of ethics from the analytic or Continental traditions. Pappas's argument moves in three steps: experience as method, moral theory and practice, and the normative standpoint of pragmatism. The claim to normativity is the most interesting and problematic. Pappas says that "the broadest characterization of Dewey's ideal is that he advocates living a moral life that is intelligent, aesthetic, and democratic." Imagination and conscientiousness are primary aspects of this emergent normativity, and Pappas also explores Dewey's notion of affections and virtues of character. Pappas is consistent in signaling the qualitative notion of faith present in Dewey's moral thought, although the content of this faith remains necessarily vague. This book handles Dewey's disparate texts and broad research adeptly, and focuses on the issues of experience and experiment in a holistic treatment of pragmatic ethics. A Major Contribution to Ethics and American Philosophy

An excellent, carefully researched, and deeply humane study of Dewey's ethics intended to fill a significant gap in Dewey scholarship. Pappas is persuasive and articulate in making the case that the legitimate starting and ending point for any philosophical investigation is everyday concrete situational experience. Pappas's book will not only help the reader to better understand Dewey's ethics, it also sets up Dewey as an important challenger to other ethical approaches, both within and outside of philosophy.

Above all else, Pappas helps a new generation of readers to see what many have already seen: how Dewey used philosophy to make a reasonable case for a way of life that would be both democratic and good, moral and aesthetic. Very, very highly recommended.

We reach for our toolbox of principles and ideals not to deduce the right thing to do, but to help us attend more perceptively and responsively to situational factors.
