Useless and stupid

This is a required text for a class I'm taking. It's a waste of money. What's sound (the basics on skinner, piaget, etc ad nauseum) is already in every other education textbook and the technology segments are dated, frequently wrong, and assume you are mentally retarded.

Does anyone really need to be told what a keyboard is? For 2 pages? Book also has a profound Microsoft bias and seems to openly deny that anything else exists.

Avoid, if possible.

This type of learning should not be taught with a traditional textbook, anyway. This particular one suffers from poor layout, way too many colors, and fonts that strain the eye.

if you need the myeducationkit access code, buy the text at a bookstore

This is the only lesson I learned from this textbook-purchasing experience: textbooks sold through Amazon or other third-party vendors often do NOT come with valid access codes for the online tools some professors (like mine) require.
I had a brand new, unused code come along with this book (as you can see by the Amazon description, "with myeducation kit") and ended up communicating with the book publisher's technical support crew for way too much time just to figure out that Amazon gave me an invalid code for the book. Apparently this happens frequently with third party vendors.

No consistent web support for the audio standard.

The issue is that the JavaScript side of web audio is not consistent and allot of the methods are not supported, this will become apparent if you were to attempt writing a scripts, a web forum I frequent gets the occasional post about this web audio synthesis and they are often questions of why something does not work, the simple answer being that allot of methods don't work because they are no longer supported or are browser specific.

About the Author

Leigh Thompson is a Distinguished Professor of Dispute Resolution & Organizations at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Best non technical text I've ever been assigned

Good text that gets right to the point instead of thousands of "fluff" words added. Working on my 2nd masters degree now, and this is one of the few texts that I actually sat down and read every assignment fully rather than just skim through and hit the highlights.
If all non technical texts were written like this, they would be much more effective!

Elizabeth Johnston Taylor, Ph.D., R.N., has a Ph.D. in Nursing and an M.S.N. in Oncology Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania, as well as training in chaplaincy and spiritual direction. This is an invaluable tool for any nurse at the bedside. I am doing research on Spiritual Interventions in Acute Care settings at my hospital and found Taylor's suggestions and insights helpful in guiding my expectations and questions for the study.

I showed it to one of the Chaplains here and they are excited to incorporate ideas expressed in the book/guide as part of improving nurses' response to spiritual distress in patients.

An excellent introduction for health care practitioners in dealing with spiritual issues common in clinical practice

This book is an excellent introduction for health care practitioners in dealing with spiritual issues common in clinical practice. Elizabeth Johnston Taylor presents the subject clearly, enhanced with quotes, cartoons and pointers towards further reading. I particularly like her exercises for readers to explore and examine their own spiritual beliefs and awarenesses, and to practice varieties of ways they can respond to patients' spiritual issues.

This book addresses the question of how to form healing verbal responses to patients' expressions of spiritual pain. Although offering healing verbal responses is a fundamental skill for health care professionals, it is not the only approach for nurturing the spirit. Being silently present, reading inspirational materials, offering prayer, and encouraging journal writing or dream analysis are examples of other approaches. (p. 5)

Thoughtful quotes help the reader consider these issues. For instance,
The compassionate man says, "I love you because I understand you." The empathizing man says, "I know how you feel." The sympathizing man says, "I feel for you." Empathy and sympathy are... devoid of healing power. They have a temporary soothing effect, but they do not heal.

I don't happen to agree with this quote, but it did give me excellent food for thought. (My own belief is that empathy is a necessary part of compassion, and that it can be very healing for people to experience empathetic listening.)

On clearing caregivers' issues, so that they can be present with the people they are helping:
Larson described these issues as "interpersonal allergies." Such allergies include the fears of: 1) our own death, 2) being hurt, 3) hurting others, and 4) being engulfed by others' problems.

While issues such as praying with patients are suggested, nowhere is there a hint of pushing the practitioners' beliefs upon the patient. On the contrary, Taylor repeatedly alerts readers maintain their neutrality and respect in dealing with patients' spiritual and religious issues.

The book comes in a version that includes a DVD with the same title, but nowhere is there mention of what is on the DVD. (I therefore gave this a pass, not knowing whether it would be of interest or worth my time.) An index would also have enhanced this useful book.
