A fast read. A good overview book.

Don't let the 3 star rating keep you from buying this book. I liked it, and if you are in the audience this book is written for, you will likely find it to be quite useful. On a price / value basis, it's a good deal.

The benefit of the book is that it provides introductory material, presented in a consistent manner, in one place. I read it on a train, while commuting and it solidified several concepts that were not previously clear after reading disjointed blog posts for a few evenings.

The author writes in a clear, friendly manner, and while I generally like a more concise and to-the-point style, he's not over the top with unnecessary verbiage.

This self-published book comes in at about 60 pages. The author maintains the sample code on GitHub.

My complaint about this book is the author did not go into enough detail. I know this is an introductory book on the subject, but he glossed over too many things. For example, WordPress manages Posts and Pages. The book only spends a page or two discussing Pages. It makes statements such as "If you have a page template called page-6.php, that means that whenever a page with ID 6 is shown, it will use that template." It never shows the reader how to construct the page. (Where does "ID 6" go, for example?)

Another topic that is not covered is how to incorporate JavaScript into a page or post. A book that is teaching someone how to build a template "From Scratch", should show how this is accomplished. On the other hand, incorporating widgets, is discussed.

I would have like to seen an approach where the author took several HTML web pages and created a theme from scratch using the pages as a starting point. I think a lot of readers will be in a situation.where they want to start using WordPress for their CMS as well as for managing blog posts, and working through an example of porting a site from plain HTML to WordPress by creating a custom theme would have been a better teaching technique.

But, all-in-all, a good read. If Joe were to write another 60 page book on this topic but for a more advanced audience, I would consider buying it.

(I did not ding the book for this, but I'm wondering if the copy I got was complete. The last sentence of the book is this: "1. You can name it whatever you want, but for this book I’ll be calling it mytheme everywhere." Strange to end a book with a point 1 of what would appear to be a list. Makes me wonder if I have a bad copy or download.)

Easy to read Basic Introduction

I like the author writing style. The book was easy to read and follow. The only draw back I found was the author used bootstrap to develop his theme but he didn't show explain how to install bootstrap into WordPress. I think he need to explain how to install bootstrap using wp_enqueue_script.

Amazing book

Our librarian bought our school three copies so we can read Hitler's Astrologer in school. On the second day all three copies were checked out! A lot of us were waiting for a while because everyone kept reading them, so I bought my own. And let me tell you I don't regret it. The story is so intriguing and every chapter is a new perspective on a new person you're following. It's very simple to keep up with everything that is happening because the writing is great.

As a high school student, I read this book for one of my history projects about World War II. Even after the project, I continued reading the book because it is so captivating. The way it was written, it jumps between different characters perspectives and it's almost like you're reading a movie.

Topic is interesting but......

The topic is interesting but the way it is presented takes it's toll. Too many different threads and there is constantly jumping between them which is not pleasant to read. It causes constant disruptions and the book as a whole is far too long.

A must read for animal lovers!

This book illustrates the bond one can feel with animals.

I've owned a guinea pig for a couple years now. Her name is Fluffy, and I'm pretty sure she flirts with me. She squeaks enthusiastically when I pet her back, lets me feed her alfalfa sprouts by hand, and sometimes lightly nibbles on my fingers.

After reading Wet Goddess, I now know that Fluffy IS flirting with me and signaling that she wants a more intimate relationship. I told her it's time to stop playing games and let's do this if we're gonna do this. She seemed receptive, so I'm taking her out on a date this Friday. We're doing a tour of a mulching company and will sample some wood chips at the end of it. After we've had our fill, we'll go the McDonalds playland because they have those tubes you can crawl in, and I know Fluffy loves crawling thru tubes.

Look, I know people are going to judge when they see me walking around town with a gorgeous guinea pig in my arms, but whatever. They're just jealous haters who don't understand the bond one can feel with a different species.

There will be obstacles to overcome in this relationship, but there are challenges in every relationship. It's all about compromise. I'm trying to teach Fluffy to stop pooping on herself, and she's teaching me how to drink water from an upside-down bottle.

I'll check back here in a few weeks to let everyone know how my relationship with Fluffy is going. Until then, I implore all people to read Wet Goddess before they pursue an inter-species relationship.

The most important book I've read about our origins. I'm so happy to know that ancient information has been preserved waiting for us to be ready to hear it. Our picture of history is so limited. This copy was purchased as a gift. I found my first copy sat on my shelf for several years before I could read it. There are books we pick up before we're ready for them. Now I'm reading it over and over.

Those teaching college-level creative writing workshops: I can't express enough how pleased I am with the textbook, SERIOUS DARING, by Lisa Claire Roney. Smart, succinct, and au currant, it contains a balanced array of anthology selections along with craft instruction, plus sections on "Reading Like a Writer," "How Writers Make a Living," "Looking Ahead in Academia," "The Changing Publishing World," etc. Roney's discussion of practical career matters along with craft makes this a must for today's up-and-coming writers, not to mention a terrific value. This is the textbook I've long been searching for, and a creative writing textbook that doesn't address these concerns in a post-MFA-exploded world is sorely remiss. I predict we'll be talking about "the Roney book" for years to come.

the most important structures book for architects

This is ASTRONOMICALLY THE BEST architectural structures book of all time!! This is the second book for a serious architecture student or architect to buy after Deplazes' foundation book. My structures education was so frustrating because it was not VISUAL. I longed for a book like this 20 years ago!! But better than I could have ever imagined, this book is intensely visual, almost no numbers, instead an encyclopedic catalogue of structural spanning options in a maniacally ordered logic, drawn with a sweet German version of Ching's style. Just skimming this book several times will aquaint you with the logic, the systems, the options, and the breathtaking possibilities this great book throws at your feet. "Take that", it says, "and go do something great!"

Another reviewer mentioned that this book is the most important structures book for architects. I would agree, but do not necessarily agree that it cannot be read as a standalone book. There is a lot of intuitive insight that can be gained from this book with no prior learning, but the reader must pay close attention and have a very good idea of how to visualize forces and their impact on structures. Readers looking for a technical manual will be sorely disappointed as all the technical details are expected to be provided by the readers themselves.

With that said, I was able to read this book without any formal knowledge of structural statics and grasp many of the concepts on the first try. But coupled with hands-on structural learning material such as Form and Forces by Edward Allen and Waclaw Zalewski the information will become instantly powerful and applicable. In fact I would say Form and Forces and Structure Systems are the key pieces of a visual understanding of structures combined with the quantitative methods required to design and interpret structures. Start with Form and Forces, then after completing all the exercises therein, pick this up and read ALL of it. It is not just a guide for daydreaming or slick collection of nice line drawings - it is a user's manual for those bold and imaginative enough to use it as such.

Many own it, few have really read it, and fewer still have actually used it. Be one of the latter and you'll blow people away.

Very exciting diagrams!

Lots of excellent diagrams illustrating structural systems. This book is an encyclopedia of structural diagrams for architects. Structural engineers will find it useful as well. The diagrams are explained quite well. The reader should have a sound understanding of basic structural behavior to fully appreciate this book. It's a picture book and not a book which explains any calculations. Excellent for bedtime reading and fantasizing.

Waste on a Scale of Cosmic Proportions

This is quite possibly one of the worst text books I have ever had the displeasure to read. I have no doubt that the author is a person of great intelligence, but his ability to write effectively and provide clear explanations is sorely lacking. The main problem deals with his lack of attention to detail when explaining fundamental concepts.

My main issue comes into play with the problems section of the book, supposedly designed to test one's knowledge/comprehension of the subject covered in that chapter or building on the preceeding chapters. However, this is not the case. The problems will hint to equations that do not exist in the text or asks questions too ambiguous for an accurate understanding. Answers are given in the back of the book, but no work is shown in how to arrive at those conclusions.

Honestly, I'd get more out of my Astronomy class if I had just been turned loose on the internet with a set of problems to solve.

Don't waste your money.

Excerpt from Chapter Two: Notes for the First Few Weeks

At this moment, in the direct aftermath of losing someone tragically, there is so little anyone can say. We cannot find the words to offer you peace - though we wish it were a gift we could give you. We promise you now that we will give you everything we can to help you make your way through this. We will help you wind a path through the haze, the confusion, and the pain that is gripping at your core.

For the first few weeks, do not concern yourself with what you will do, where you will go, or what lies in the future. For now, we ask that you simply follow the guidelines in this chapter. There will be time to cope, to understand, to process - later. Right now, you simply need to take care of you.

Treat Yourself as if You Were in Intensive Care
You are in the process of going through one of the most traumatic experiences a person can endure. The challenges you have already faced, both physically and mentally, will leave you vulnerable, exhausted, and weak. It is imperative that you focus directly on yourself and on any dependents. Find ways to get your needs met first in these few weeks.

In the first week or so you will probably feel stunned and overwhelmed. You may also feel numb or hysterical. Your emotional system shuts down, providing temporary insulation from the full impact of your loss. You will go through the motions; it will look like you're coping well sometimes.

In her book, The Worst Loss, Barbara D. Rosof writes, "In shock you may be unable to move or speak coherently; people report that they cannot think. Shock responses may also be active and intense; you may have screamed, or run from the room, or physically attacked the bringer of the news. All of these behaviors are means of shutting down, or distancing yourself from a reality that you do not yet have a way to deal with. As you look back, your behavior may seem bizarre and totally out of character for you. Remember that your entire world had been knocked out from under you. You were in free fall, and your first task was to find any way to stop the fall."

When the funeral is over and your relatives and friends have gone home, the shock begins to wear off. It is important not to make any decisions that will have a lasting impact on your life (for example, sell the house, give away the person's belongings, etc.) while you are in shock.

Expect to Be Distracted
During the first few weeks, your mind will be filled with racing thoughts and unfamiliar emotions. Many people report having difficulty with simple tasks. Losing one's keys, forgetting where you are while driving, and sluggish reaction time are all commonly reported problems. With everything you are mentally and physically trying to process, it's normal to be distracted. Take special caution. Try to avoid driving and other activities where these symptoms may cause injury.

Have Someone Near You
If possible, choose a close friend to keep near you through the first week or two. Let this person help you make decisions, hear your fears or concerns, and be the shoulder for you to lean on. Give them a copy of this book. Later, as you move through the grieving process, it will be very helpful to have someone who has "been there" and understands thoroughly what you are talking about.

Accept the Help of Friends
Our energy is so depleted in the first few weeks after loss, it's hard to even ask for help. We have included a handout at the end of this chapter that can be photocopied freely and given to your inner circle of friends and relatives. You may be reluctant to do this, but please do. Even if we don't think we need people right now, we do indeed. Brook shares her story of friendship . . .

"When I lost my brother, my friend Sara was my anchor. I never asked her to come over that evening but as soon as she heard, she came (even though I told her there was nothing she could do). She simply sat next to me. Then she went upstairs and packed my bag for the upcoming week. She hugged me when I needed it and sat in the other room when I needed to be alone. To this day, her warm presence brings tears to my eyes. It was an extension of love and caring like few I have known."

If, like Brook, you are too grief-ridden to ask for help, simply show friends this book and let them read these few pages so they have an idea of what you need and how to support you. Friends want to help, but they rarely know how. The cycle of your grief will be more bearable when you hold the hand of a friend. Reach out. The following two entries summarize beautifully what those who face grief need from the people around them.

Caring for Your Children
If you have small children, contact friends and relatives to help you care for them. Consider having someone stay with you for the specific task of caring for your children, since some children may be further traumatized by separation. In Chapter Nine we cover the specifics of children and grief. While it is human nature to want to help and care for others, we must understand at this trying time we will barely have enough energy to care for ourselves. Even if we want to help those around us, we won't have the resources. It's in our best interest to allow this time for our own grief.

Someone to Take Calls and Check Email
If the person who has died is of your immediate family, you will be receiving many phone calls, visitors, and cards. Have a friend come by to take messages, check emails, answer the door, and answer the phone. Most callers do not expect to speak directly with the family but simply wish to express their condolences. Have someone keep a notepad handy to record the names and messages of callers. Be forewarned, occasionally you may receive a strange call or a strange card.

Brook once took a message from a caller who offered condolences for the loss of her brother and then in a second breath requested a current picture of her daughter. Pam remembers a caller who said, "I'm sure George's death was easier for you, because you were divorced after all." These thoughts and comments are inappropriate and can be very hurtful, though the caller does not intend them to be. In our society, we just don't know how to handle grief and loss. People cope with grief differently - many people don't know how to cope at all. When you think of it, our world is geared toward gaining and acquiring; we have few lessons on how to handle loss. Occasionally people will ask a strange question or perhaps write a note in a card that seems a bit "out of place." Realize that this is not done to hurt you; these are just people who are inept at handling loss and the thought of loss.

The Right Book

I've been a widower for two years. Over this time, I've read many books on grief. This is the best I've seen. It does a comprehensive job of touching on the many types of loss, and offers helpful suggestions for coping. Something I particularly liked was that it doesn't rely on religious platitudes as a solution for grief. Rather, the authors encourage you to vent your anger at your creater - he (or she) is big enough and compassionate enough to take it.

I would suggest this book to anyone who is dealing with grief. It doesn matter whether the loss just occurred, or is several years old.

A Life Preserver For the Grieving.

Buy this book now. One day, you or someone you love deeply will need it. By giving the book to someone who needs it, you will be able to help them when they need it most. By owning the book yourself, you will be able to anticipate the needs of the freshly bereaved. I will be giving this book frequently. This book came a year after my loved one's death, and it was still a huge help. It's a breath of fresh air in the grief genre. How I wish I'd had it when I was going through the first weeks and months. Even this far out, it has helped me immeasurably. I have lost most of my family in the last 20 years. I lost my spouse last year.
PLEASE. Get and read this book, and give copies to the newly bereaved. They will thank you, no, BLESS you for it.
