A look at the new military industrial complex and it's not who you think

OK. I'll say it. Jake Lingwall is a time traveler. He's been there, played Johnny B. Goode and wacked out his descendants. His second book in the Freelancer series, "The Unseen," upends the first. There's no messing around with weird disturbing future high schools where curriculum has become so politically correct it has no value. There's just straight up story. And better than that, he's got an angle on what direction computing could (note I said could) take. The Unseen refers to a group of hackers led by a sweet (turns out too sweet) guy who wows our hero Kari, the reformed former military coder. In the first book, the government, or what's left of it in the great United States co-opts Kari for her brain and its potential brawn. They want to use her to further weaponize their military in a fight with the less progressive Middle States. Kari escapes. Barely. But all is not perfect. Kari's in hiding, somewhat. And she's sick of making flying drones that can kill. But her protector, a general in the Middle States, mysteriously dies and this new government is out to get her. She gets a warning from the Unseen right before black op troops blast into her home. She does protect her little dog. And she gets away with the help of the Unseen. What unfolds later is a pretty cerebral discussion of technology and its influence and potential. At times, it does appear Lingwall is somewhat influenced by Ian Flemming. His baddy bears striking resemblance to the single-mindedness of one out for supreme power. But, hey, it works. And he's good at keeping the story moving in a constantly interesting direction while throwing out ideas he's likely pondered for some time. He's an inventive author and storyteller. I'll definitely be one of the first to consume his next work.

Lingwall delivers with his second hacker novel, leaving readers wanting more Kari and more stories in this world.

When Lingwall claimed this book was better than the first, I didn't believe him, and chalked it up as hyperbolic self-praise.

Simply: he delivered.

Although a major plot point was fairly predictable (at least if you're generally aware of hacker culture and recent popular forays into it), the rest was nicely delightful. He plays with common hacker stereotypes and turns them nicely on their heads showing that hackers come from everywhere (and not just 20-something males with poor hygiene-- although he pokes fun at this during a few of Kari's longer sessions) and that seemingly infinite power can (and should) be used for good.

Kari's integrity might come across a bit pollyanna-like, but it contrasts nicely with the predominating style of most current protagonists: every one is broken and makes their own morals. Kari's code is easy to follow and consistent across both of Lingwall's novels. She holds to it, and does not cross the lines or her own morality.

In the end, he leaves you wanting more, and heavy-handedly taunts you with a third (which will be the soonest a conclusion to Kari's tale could be reached).

I hope Kari gets at least two more tales. Her story is easily that complex. And if Lingwall is feeling generous, it would be easy to do standalone books for each of the hackers in his world (OSC-esque anyone?).

But for now, the reader should be more than contented with Kari. She is the protagonist we need to know and understand to better understand our own relationship with technology.

Intrepid hacker Kari Tahe makes a break from prison using her special skills. Alas, something goes terribly wrong. On the verge of capture, she’s rescued and delivered to a secret hacker hideaway run by a guy named Oedipus. The plush retreat is nothing short of fabulous, and like-minded people are always inviting Kari to join their hacking games.

But she misses her friends David and Audrey. She wishes the war would end so life would get back to normal. While Kari admires the Eden-like sanctuary and the talent around her, she’s getting mixed signals from people, especially Oedipus. She’s idolized his feats for years, so her hero worship of him blinds her to his nature.

As the war escalates, a fellow hacker warns her to trust no one. Already on edge, Kari decides to stop taking things on face value, and trouble like she’s never seen before rains down on her. Can she survive in this strange new world?

Another winning Kindle Scout book. I loved Freelancer, the first book of this dystopian series, and The Unseen met my high expectations and more. Author Jake Lingwall wove a powerful tale of intrigue and high tech wizardry that had me reading at darn near warp speeds. Nicely done!

Primer of statistics - not specific to biostatistics

This book showed up in my med school library today and I read most of it in about an hour. Not that I'm anything special in terms of reading speed, it's just not as dense as most stat books. That's a good thing, mostly - the author has an engaging writing style that's approachable. He goes over a large number of statistical tests, applying them to problems such as predicting martian weights for a given height. Yep, Martians. And plotonians, when the tobacco companies are forced to market further afield. But he is pretty step-by-step which is good for an intro.

What is the standard deviation? When would you use a t-test? Why p < .05? If those are new concepts to you then I think you'd find it useful. He makes the point in his intro that many people just accept journal article results. Maybe that's his tie-in to biostats - if you are reading biostats articles then you need to know stats?

To me, if you're looking to learn about biostatistics, I say keep looking. While the author does use examples that relate to living things, such as the effect cell phone radiation on rabbit sperm, it's got very little to do with the business of biostatistics. He's got so many elements in there to let you calculate stats by hand (or to use programs that appear on the accompanying CD-ROM) that it fluffs up the book unnecessarily. Personally I'd just get a Schaum's outline which will give you the opportunity to practice the concepts and then an actual biostats book to learn more about the field. Or maybe get this book along with a schaum's guide so you'll at least be able to work with the concepts. Here's one I picked up - it's cheap. Schaum's Outline of Probability and Statistics, 3rd Ed. (Schaum's Outline Series)

So, high marks for readability, as an introductory stats book, but when you try to think about reality - when the relationships between what you are trying to predict and all of the things you hope predict that thing aren't perfect it shows that it's only 250 useful pages and in the end it's just what it says, a primer but of statistics, not biostatistics.

So confusing

I minored in mathematics in undergrad and aced biostatistics there. This book has SO many mistake (class makes a game out of finding them) and I don't mean the grammatical ones. Where did this guy learn to write? Run-on sentences galore are compounded upon his misuse of terminology (i.e calling a group a "population" and failing to mention he changes his definition by chapter 3 on what that is)

Often we think of iconic American pioneers as beneficiaries of unimaginable intellectual gifts that are the sole reason for a person's achievement. You would think this is particularly so of Grace Murray Hopper, the woman who pioneered the modern era of computer science. Among many, many brilliant technical achievements (realizing computers could do more than just add and subtract numbers - and then figuring out how to make them do more) she will be familiar to laymen as the creator of COBOL the first modern programming language that elegantly programmed the computing machines in natural language, using English, instead of numbers.

Her revealing portrait and absorbing oral biography from the Women of Wisdom Series excerpted from Particular Passions: Talks with Women Who Have Shaped our Times shows us otherwise. What is so exceptional about this biography is that it was crafted all from her own words, first person and you can really hear her speaking and feel her personality!

Meira Levinson's NO CITIZEN LEFT BEHIND Reminds Us That We All Have A Voice That Deserves To Be Heard

One of the worst feelings in the world is to be in a place an be treated like you're invisible. It's a terrible experience, but one that men and women have to contend with each and every day. What Meira Levinson's book NO CITIZEN LEFT BEHIND reminded me of, however, is that this is also a situation that young people in certain areas have to contend with as well.

This book is more than just about education and the disparities that exist in some areas of the United States. It is about what seems like an attitude of neglect for some and even apathy towards others that seemingly are being set up for failure. Meira knows this world firsthand because she taught in it, but we are able to see through her account exactly what some of those who are supposed to mold our future are having to deal with.

As someone who is all about discussing a problem with the hopes of finding a solution, my initial reaction to the book is what can I do to help fix this. I then realized that it's a question we all have to ask ourselves, and be willing to step up when the answer becomes clear to us. First we have to sound the alarm that there is trouble in our education system. Then we have to look for ways to bridge the gaps that exist, realizing that people of all walks of life deserve the opportunity to reach their own personal greatness. And that personal greatness doesn't have to be defined by what those in their families have been able to do or even those in their neighborhoods.

It's all about hope, and not giving up on that hope even when things might not move as quickly as we would like. Meira Levinson tells us that change can occur, but we have to be willing to evolve and change ourselves in order to achieve it. NO CITIZEN LEFT BEHIND is a great resource for anyone looking to make sure that those in the next generation realize they have a voice and are given the tools to make sure it is heard.

Important book for educators and anyone interested in the health of democracy in the US

In No Citizen Left Behind Dr. Levinson clearly articulates a rationale for why the civic empowerment gap is a problem for all Americans. The fact that many voices (mostly those of the poor and people of color) are not heard by politicians and policy-makers not only tarnishes the promise of American democracy but also yields ineffective public policy. Then Dr. Levinson presents one solution to this problem: improved civic education, especially for students in disenfranchised communities. Using anecdotes from her years as a teacher, arguments based on her training as a political philosopher and ample social science research, she engages the reader in a provocative discussion about the state of civic education today and how it could be improved. Dr. Levinson's writing contains all of the rigor of the academy, but is written for a general audience who just wants to know more about how American democracy can become more inclusive. Teachers and teacher educators, especially history teachers, should definitely read No Citizen Left Behind. I am a teacher educator and will be assigning this book to all of my pre-service teachers. Thank you, Dr. Levinson.

No Citizen Left Behind

In No Citizen Left Behind Meira Levinson puts some fire into the often dull argument that the United States needs to get serious about civic education, calling for reform for a system that today largely excludes poor and minority students from democratic participation. Levinson explores the causes of and potential solutions to this "civic empowerment gap" through many lenses. As a political philosopher, she considers the political, sociological and historical context of the United States and of our education system, closely examining the meanings of citizenship and democracy. She asks hard questions about how we teach civics in a diverse country where our ethnoracial identities invariably dictate our experiences of citizenship. She grapples with how these theories trickle down into practice by sharing personal stories from her years of inner-city teaching. In addressing these questions and others, she doesn't fantasize about an unreachable Shangri-La of civic education. Instead, she clearly outlines the qualities of her gold standard curriculum, Action Civics, and highlights schools and organizations that have begun to actualize it.

This book is an important read, especially now, as political discourse seems to be dissolving into party-line semantics. While the book highlights many severe problems with our schools and political institutions, it also provides hope by showing that it is possible to educate ALL citizens to create a robust and engaged democracy.
